About the Author
P. G. O'Neill, a native Londoner, is Professor of Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in 1957 with a thesis on traditional Japanese drama. His publications include Japanese Names, A Guide to No, Early No Drama, An Introduction to Written Japanese (with S. Yanada), and A Programmed Introduction to Literary-Style Japanese.

Somewhat useful, but far from comprehensive

After hearing many people tell me how great this book was I finally bought it. While it has been somewhat useful in finding the readings for some names, it is far from being "A Comprehensive Index" of Japanese names. Less than half of the names I try to look up in it are even listed, and the way the kanji are indexed is not intuitive (even to someone familiar with radicals and stroke-count indices).
I would only recommend this to someone who doesn't have access to a real name dictionary from Japan, but don't count on it to be "comprehensive" in any sense of the word. It's not even close.

Not nearly that bad...

This book is great. It doesn't have every name, but that is a difficult task. it doesn't have alot of period names, but that's not what it was writen for. It was writen (in the 60's & 70's) to compile a list of readings and spellins of japanese names commonly used today (read 1972). It has Isaburou in it - that is a really rare name so you have to give O'Neill credit. But if you look up really old names (like medeival names) you probably aren't going to find it - but that's not what it's for - it's for names spellable with the 1,945 kanji deemed for general usage by the Japanese govt. in 1948 and the additional 284 allowed for name usage only. While that may seem like alot, that's peanuts compared to what was available in the day. So cut O'Neill a break - the book is a great general reference for Japanese names. A more comprehesive work (on surnames only) by Wolfgang Hadamitzky is available from KG Saur but it's composed of 3 massive (websters dictionary sized - the hardback version) volumes. O'Neill fits in your pocket.

Great for historical names

Well, Japanese names, like names in other languages, are complicated. You cannot expect every Japanese name you've ever heard is in this book. Most names would have at least 2 Kanji representations, so it is difficult and unrealistic to include all representations. Just like there are several spellings for the name Catherine (Katherine, Katheryn, Kathrin...etc). So I would say this book is fairly useful. Especially when it comes to historical figures. If you have a English spelling of a Japanese name, you can find the corresponding Kanji representations without much trouble most of the times.

Ponderous, detailed, somewhat obscure

Throughout history there are characters who aren't at the center of the stage, but who are important supporting players in the world's affairs. Gideon Welles was one of these: he served as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy during all of the Civil War, and oversaw the expansion of that service from a tiny pre-war, almost exclusively sail-driven fleet into a large, steam-driven armada, sufficient to defeat Confederate ironclads, hunt down commerce raiders, and blockade all of the South. It was a monumental task, and Welles proved equal to it after a shaky start.

Who was this man, how did he come to prominence, and why did Lincoln appoint him to the post? Those are the questions that the author, John Niven, attempts to answer. Welles was primarily a newspaperman, though he did work in various government posts also, including one stint in the Department of the Navy during the Mexican-American War. However, he'd essentially been elected to no offices prior to being appointed Navy Secretary, and he'd only held that one appointment in the Navy Department prior to the appointment.

He did have one singular qualification from Lincoln's point of view, though. He was pretty much a founding member of the Republican Party, having broken with the Democrats over various issues relating to slavery. This gave him entree into Lincoln's circle of advisers and friends, and when Welles entered, he impressed people, and was on the list to be appointed to a cabinet post as a result.

I generally enjoyed this book, within limits. The author is a historian, a specialist in mid-19th Century political history, and it shows. Unfortunately, though the book is reasonably well-written, the author doesn't do much for context. So Andrew Jackson appears, for instance, without an introduction, and Welles at various times either belongs to or opposes political groups called "Loco-Focos", "Barnburners", and "Hunkers". The author never bothers to really explain any of that, so you're expected to know what a Loco-Foco was, on your own.

Those misgivings aside, this is *the* biography of Welles, and it belongs in the library of anyone interested in the Lincoln administration and the era.

It was 34 years ago I first picked up this book and have been a fan of John Niven ever since. This book is the best in the distinguished list of Dr. Niven;s writings. Gideon Welles moves from editor to politician to powerful figure in the Lincoln administration and we follow him as fellow travelers on this voyage. This is one book well worth the price for your library.

Excellent, Readable Biography of Lincoln's Navy Secretary

John Niven sheds some light on Gideon Welles, the 19th century politician best known for his service as Abraham Lincoln’s Navy secretary. But Welles was far more than that as this book illustrates. A leading Jacksonian editor based out of Connecticut, Welles was always a competent and respected member of Lincoln’s Cabinet who also served as a close adviser to Andrew Johnson as well. Welles also helped launch the GOP. Niven sheds some light on this obscure figure and his role as a Jacksonian Democrat who opposed slavery, often clashing with “doughface” Isaac Toucey (who served in Polk’s and Buchanan’s Cabinets and really needs a biography) over the party’s direction in Connecticut. Besides offering a good account of his leading the Navy during the war, Niven is also able to shed some light on Welles’ personal life and his various writings before and after the war, including his efforts to show Lincoln as a strong figure. The book is helped by a good use of primary sources, including Welles’ diaries. This is one of the best biographies of a 19th century American politician offering new insights in a readable fashion. Highly recommended.

The authors Gundling, Hogan and Cvitkovich address three "megatrends" that are shaping our world today--population growth in the developing world; shifting balance of GDP (with the growth of middle classes in emerging markets); and urbanization in Asia and Africa. They make a compelling research-based case for why global leadership differs from more general definitions of leadership, including multiple case examples. Overall, an excellent resource for learning how to adapt to different countries and cultures to be successful.

Well-conceived, research-based plan for leading international teams

good book on cross cultural leadership.

The book is very good about communicating the need and providing some tools and guidance for the differences in leading cross culturally. However the Kindle for PC is erratic and unpredictable. I have had many difficulties with accessing the book. Most of the time it will not open and I must go through a convoluted process of deregistering and reregistering and redownloading only to have it fail again fifteen minutes later.

Sakey, whose debut novel, The Blade Itself (2007), garnered a truckload of praise, returns with a chilling story that combines an ordinary couple’s desperation with a band of Chicago criminals’ unslaked thirst for revenge. It’s masterful in showing how the daily drip, drip of dreams deferred can lead people into peril. Sakey’s opening chapters juxtapose an unbearably tense murder-and-betrayal scene in a club against a domestic drama centered on a couple’s inability to conceive a child. Readers may feel a bit of whiplash with the contrast, but Sakey’s portrayal of the couple’s despair (to the tune of $15,000 per failed in vitro treatment) is essential to understanding their plight in the rest of the novel. The plot hinges, however, on one very creaky, contrived element. The couple owns a two-flat and rents the bottom unit to a taciturn, somewhat creepy tenant. The deus ex machina element comes in when the husband smells smoke, the couple investigates downstairs, and finds that where there’s smoke—there’s a pile of money just lying on the floor with the tenant conveniently dead. The couple is now $400,000 to the good, and the Chicago Police no wiser, but, of course, their troubles are just beginning. The dead tenant betrayed some very bad, well-connected criminals, who will stop at nothing to retrieve their money and exact revenge. Excellent chase and psychological drama, after the initial plot bump. --Connie Fletcher

Good People Better Than Good

Good People seems like a simple enough proposition. No leader deliberately picks mugs. Anthony Tjan takes it a fair bit deeper, defining "goods" in a holistic manner in which the term embraces people, purpose and process in business. Tjan dissects each aspect (like a good McKinsey alumni) and while this can sometimes make the book a bit laboured it does reflect intense reflection, research and interview. The author has credibility as an entrepreneur as well as an analyst and anyone looking for confirmation that business can succeed as a social as well as a profit making process without contradiction will find support here. I did.

The Goodness Pyramid provides a framework that places leadership into a presence of one's own best self while sparking one's desire to transcend their own mental model, biases, assumptions, and dominant internal narrative. Great Book

I am a student at Ferris State. My professor told us that he has had many books in his International Business class and that this one is by far the best and recommended that we keep it when the semester is over rather than sell it. It is very easy to follow and there are tons of interesting stories and graphics that go along with the reading. I like the book and I have been getting A's on all of my quizzes because it really is easy to understand and follow.

Great textbook, very broad in scope.

This textbook covers a lot, and well. I had a class this semester that used it, and this text was the highlight. I am definitely keeping it after the class is over.

The only problem is that authors spend a lot of time discussing the inner working of entities that only marginally affect the life of international businesses, like the European Union, the IMF and the World Bank. This is a well-written textbook, full of interesting and unusual examples of international business within the global context. The authors have done their homework and give thoughtul coverage to the structure of business in individual countries and to national and world agencies that affect change in dominant and emerging markets. Their understanding of cultural differences that affect business is impressive. The book is attractively set up and useful.

A Definite Must Read!

This book gave me a new outlook on what it takes to be an effective ministry leader, and the way to be the most effective you can be! I recommend this book for anyone looking to understand the keys to being world changers, to anyone leading ministries, and anyone looking for encouragement. Amazing book!

A wonderful book!

This book was so good, I couldn't put it down. Gerry points out certain people in the Bible who persevered in hard times, and shows us ways we can do the same in our lives today. He also shares stories of people in his congregation today who are living out these principles. He also puts some discussion questions after each chapter, to help you apply it to your own life, along with prayers. Get ready to be challenged and encouraged!

Encouraging and equipping

Calvin Coolidge once said "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."
This quote summarizes a character trait that Pastor Gerry would appropriately call, "Grit", in his new book. Not only does he live this out incredibly in his own life and offer much wisdom and example there, but this easy read will leave its readers encouraged and equipped to pursue a life of faith and persistence as they seek to glorify God in every area of their lives
