Getting Over It and Getting Back to You

30 Days to Getting Over the Dork You Used to Call Your Boyfriend by Clea Hantman was surprisingly cute, clean, and uplifting. The book is split up into five sections, one for each stage of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), with specific activities and reading for each day.

It's easy to say, "Stop moping and move on," but harder to do. Throughout the book, readers are encouraged to get up off of the couch and dance, to reconnect with friends and with themselves. They are never told to be vengeful or rude. It's less about the ex and more about you. It does not inspire selfishness nor grudges, but rather, self-confidence and optimism.

My favorite section is Day Seventeen: Give a Little Bit, which begins on page 85. This chapter is all about giving back. "There are a zillion ways for you to volunteer. The trick is finding one that's right for you." "For example, you may not teach children how to read, but you can help those children." If you want to donate your time to a worthy organization or cause but don't know where to start, this chapter provides some great ideas, such as hosting or participating in walk-a-thon, volunteering, and donating your old clothes.

30 Days is rife with cool pick-me-up ideas, activities, and surveys. The book even closes with lists of celebrities who have been dumped or have dumped others. The point is this happens to everyone, and you'll be okay. With quirky writing, personal anecdotes from the author, and a song at the end of every chapter, this book is sure to make teens laugh out loud. Laughter is the best medicine, after all, and what a great way to start healing.

A breakup can seem like the end of the world to a teenage girl. Clea Hantman, author of the new book 30 DAYS TO GETTING OVER THE DORK YOU USED TO CALL YOUR BOYFRIEND, realizes this and treats her readers with sensitivity. But along with offering some advice and perspective, Hantman also offers a lot of fun.

When you're mourning the loss of a relationship, she writes, you go through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The book is divided into parts based on these five stages, and for each of the thirty days, she offers an activity.

At first these activities include things like putting all reminders of "the dork" in a box and writing down all the things that were wrong with him, but eventually they move on to things like exercising, volunteering, even feng shui. Every day also has a song that's relevant to that day's activity and is, usually, pretty cool. (I made some additions to my iTunes after reading this book!)

The book is also sprinkled with pop culture references that teenagers can relate to and concludes with the lists, "Girls Who Have Dumped with Aplomb," "Girls Who Have Been More Famously Dumped Than You (And Lived to Tell!)," "Movies About Being Dumped," "More Break-Up Songs," and "Books About the Ups, Downs, and In-Betweens of Relationships."

I don't know how effective this book would be for getting over a serious relationship that lasted for years, but I think it provides a lot of guidance and sympathy for most teenage girls dealing with breakups. For everyone else it will, at the very least, provide a smile.

Hi, my name's Victoria Bampton, and I'm the author of the 'Adobe Lightroom- The Missing FAQ' series of books. I'm an Adobe Community Professional and Certified Expert, but more importantly, I'm a real user, just like you. You probably recognize my name from one of the many Lightroom or other photographic forums I frequent. I love spending time helping Lightroom users get the best out of the software! In fact, that's where this book started - certain questions come up repeatedly on the forums, and none of the available books seem to answer them - or if they do, you have to read the entire book to find the answer. I wanted to be able to recommend an easy reference book - one that you can pick up and skip straight to the answer you're looking for - but there wasn't one. Instead, I sat down and compiled a list of questions directly from the forums, and wrote jargon-free answers as if I was answering a user on the forums. The missing FAQ? Yes indeed.

Adobe is back with Lightroom 5, which means photographers using the powerful software are clamoring to learn all about the newest version. Victoria's book fills this need perfectly. From the start of the book, Victoria makes everything easy to find with a simple Table of Contents, followed by a Table of Contents in Detail. This may not sound like a big deal, but it makes the book incredibly easy to browse and research the issue you might be having.

We photographers are visual. Victoria's book is designed simply and without garish decorations and it makes it much easier to focus upon the screenshots and content. The book focuses on the things that I need to know, and doesn't waste time getting to the questions you'll have.

In my experience, books on Lightroom fall into one of two categories: quick start books that get straight to the basics, and fully detailed books that cover EVERY part of Lightroom. Victoria managed to create a book that covers both. Chapter 2 is a quick start guide that you can use if you're new to Lightroom. The rest of the book is a complete course on how to use the app.

Victoria has penned the book that I will use when I'm searching for the details that I need to deliver high quality images to my clients. Victoria, thanks for this book and the work that you do. As a fellow Lightroom instructor, I'm thrilled with how much I've learned from this book.

The Lightroom 5 Missing Manual

Had a MAJOR catastrophy yesterday when my Lightroom 5 cataloge file crashed unn ceramoniously without warning.
Couldn't find a backup (which I do religeously) to straighten it out.
Tried creating a New Catalog but it was not successful 30,000 files plus numerous Collections were wandering about in the ether somewhere.
Where to turn???? Fist stop the Scott Kelby LR4 book.....no help.....
Tried splitting up the Data files & creating 2 new Catalogs, not much success there either.

I'd just bought Victoria's new Lightroom 5 'Missing Manual' and it helped a lot!
Called Adobe, got some geek somewhere in the nether world who's best advice was to copy all my file to a new folder & try to create a NEW catalog, this would lose all my collections.

I didn't realize at the time that LR5 uses a new default Windows folder for storing the lcat files. When I went to the usual location, all I found was LR 3, 4, files

Sent a plea for help to Victoria.........She answered quickly and over the next few hours & numerous emails, she walked me thru the repair, which in the end restored all my info, collections and alll. She was super helpfull to a LR novice and we are now up & running again with everything fixed.

I can't rave enough about the help (at no cost to me but TIME for her) and she was patient & supportive whilst I was having a complete meltdown.

I heartily reccommend her new book and its really inexpensive for the PDF version

A very good book!

I've watched so many online tutorials and webinars and I learned about everything I need from them...almost. Sometimes it seems that there is nothing like a good written guide, that explains everything (and this book hits EVERYTHING). Many of the points made in Ms. Bampton's book make you want to stop and try it right then and I do. The writing style is comfortable, the teaching accurate and this is simply a great LR 5 book.

Then you get to the bonus parts of getting not only the e-book, as Ms. Bampton said herself, is actually the primary version of her work (absolutely great to keep on a tablet and handy as a more mobile reference), but getting this hard copy too. Best of both worlds!!

Plus, besides the great e-book, and a hard copy backup, you get a premium membership on her website to keep up with the latest.

Highly recommended; the e-book, hard copy and the website. Try it all! You'll like it all!!

Motivate Your Students

I have some of the same questions all educators do, including: how to motivate my students, how to help my students feel more positive about school, and how to help my students develop higher-order thinking questions. Thanks to Larry Ferlazzo's latest book, I now have answers to these questions and several others. Although Larry Ferlazzo teaches high school, as an elementary teacher, I can still use (and easily modify) his many ideas and lesson plans. I highly recommend this book. It will make you a more effective teacher because you will be better equipped to deal with the daily challenges of motivating students.

Nice thoughts, but not applicable.

I'm not convinced that the lessons in this book can be universally applied. Sure, there are some interesting ideas in here about teaching optimism versus pessimism, different types of text that people read, goal-setting, and the like, but I'm almost positive that this wouldn't fly in an EFL situation outside of America. I'm almost definitely sure it wouldn't fly in a for-profit academy. And I'm not certain, but it's possible that some of these lessons couldn't even be applied on the East Coast of the United States either, say in New York City or Chicago. There are some recommended manufactured scripts for teachers in this book, for example, that sound absolutely awkward coming out of my mouth--almost robotic and superficial. Also, nearly every activity seems to involve some kind of drawing of something, which I'm sure would make my current supervisors absolutely infuriated with me (I teach high school and middle school, by the way). Even with the research that has been done on how students most effectively learn, the truth is that science is inseparable from culture... and this truth becomes blatantly clear within the pages of this book.

If I ever go back to the United States and find work in San Diego or Sacramento, maybe I'll have some use for this book. However, given my personal teaching circumstances that presently forbid the use of said activities contained in this book, coupled with the money that I spent on this book, I have become a very disappointed buyer. I guess a sucker is born every day.

Also, be forewarned that Mr. Ferlazzo does a lot of cross-promoting in this book and almost every other sentence makes reference to the crucial activities that can be found in his other books that you need to buy, etc. etc. You get the idea.

A Keeper!

Written in a similar style to his "Helping Students Motivate Themselves", this book is a great combination. It focuses on issues that matter; it is relevant. It is research based and gives you a sense of the underlying theory. It is practical and actionable; it gives you tested materials you can easily adapt to your class.

It is very readable and too the point. It is written by a practicing teacher for teachers. I can go to his blog and read about the evolution of most of these materials. I can view artifacts his students have created using some of these materials.

Straightforward and tasty

This is an excellent cookbook with clear pictures and no-nonsense. Me and my wife sometimes prepare 5 different recipes in a week from this book. It provides precisely the basic ingredients you need and a few simple steps to prepare a recipe. Both the cooking time and total preparation time are given and accurate (often 15-20 minutes and you're done).

We are probably going to buy a new copy soon, because ours is stained with sauce and other spilt ingredients due to very frequent use in the kitchen!

I own many vegetarian cookbooks.. this is by far the one I go to most often. All of the recipes are straightforward and absolutely delicious. I serve dishes from this book to my meat eating friends and am always asked for the recipe. The sauce for the tai salad alone was worth the price of the book. Its always great to buy something and feel like you got an amazing deal.
