There are many reworked examples and derivations. There is an entirely new chapter on interplanetary motion. There is an improved and expanded discussion of the latest coordinate systems, orbit determination, and differential correction. Perhaps most important is that, as with the third edition, all of the software routines described in the book are now available for free in FORTRAN, PASCAL, C++, VBA, and MatLab. This makes the fourth edition an even more valuable text and superb reference.

Best book available on Astrodynamics

This is hands down the best book available on the subject of Astrodynamics. Over the years, I have read and owned several books on the subject but Vallado has an approach that is easy to understand. His use of practical examples provide built in test cases for application of the subject matter. A must have book for anyone interested in the subject.

One of the best

Coming to orbital mechanics from a celestial mechanics point of view, I didn't want to like this book. However, I would have to say that this is possibly the best orbital mechanics book available at this time. His derivations are some of the easiest to follow and most complete of any text. He does not gloss over intermediate steps in them. His discussions of perturbations are the most detailed I have seen. He gives considerable historical background and introduction to many chapters, enough so that you can pick up the thread of historical literature if you so desire. The book was published just as the new IAU 2000 frame of reference was being introduced, and it does cover that, as well as older FK5 and other systems. Pseudo-code algorithms are followed by worked examples, which is great for those of us who want to actually apply some of the theory. Of course, the book is Earth-satellite specific, so it is slanted toward that rather than celestial mechanics, but in some respects this is a plus. A great deal of modern, computerized analysis of satellite orbits is readily applicable to celestial mechanics, and Vallado covers it well. Other things are of less interest to a celestial mechanician - modelling of Earth's atmosphere and so forth, but this is still interesting. I have some minor nits: he uses the "little angular hat" vector notation rather than the bolded-character notation, which I prefer. Vallado writes in a folksy, first-persony sort of style, which is different than the almost pompous tone one gets in many celestial mechanics texts. As I said, minor.
