Very Impressed with this book

If you are a "do it your selfer" you need this book. In my opinion, the title is no accurate. This book contains much more than just info on how to build small buildings. It includes how to build a good fence, how to build a smoke house, how to wire a two way switch, ect. It contains everything that is not common knowledge to the common man, and it has lots of pictures. If you live on the farm and do most things yourself, this book is a required tool.

A great guide book

From permits to the finish coat of paint, this book will guide you through your building process. Burch describes the advantages of different framing methods, roof styles and materials and backs his text with useful reference tables and concise construction details. The book presents plans for five small barns, two two-stall stables, a root and storm cellar, a carport, a tool shed, a woodshed, a smokehouse and shelters for hens, pigs and rabbits.

This is not a bad book, but about half is on basic building skills which anyone who is going to build a sizable strucuture ought to have acquired first. You can get that from a Time Life or Readers Digest 'Home improvement' book on basic carpentry skills. Very general instructions without a lot of detail- for example, window fininshing details, roof details- you have to figure out the details yourself, and everyone knows that is where the devil is! And when the chapter on electrical wiring starts out by reccomending that you shouldn't do it yourself, well... it's just a sign of too many lawyers in the USA.

The sections on barns and other strucuture are interesting, with lots of ideas that one can adapt to your specific needs. Most are reworked from USDA Cooperative extension plans- which you can view a huge number for free from Univ of North Dakota at this link-

Since I found this website, my opinion of the book has gone down a lot, since so much is not original material.

The other challenge I would have is on pole frame constuction- all his plans show huge concerte footings 16-24" dia 8-12" thick under poles for his buildings. Digging/drilling and pouring these negates the advanage in work/cost saving of pole frame building. In the area where I live, poles are commonly set in our heavy clay with a little cement or just well tamped soil around them. I understand the concern about bearing ability, and I'm not an engineer, but these poles function as pilings- they hold up the load not just from their bottom surface area, but also from the friction of the post in the ground. Any professional can correct me if they feel otherwise.

All in all, it is an interesting book but he could omit the first half and flesh out the rest.

The increasing complexity of codes has encouraged the use of computers for design and has stimulated the development of computer-based handbooks. Before computer software can be successfully used in the structural design of buildings, preliminary sizes of structural elements must be established from handbook tables, estimates, or experienced first guesses for input into the com� puter.

Immanuel Schochet o.b.m., as published in the booklet "Prayers, Blessings, Principles of Faith, and Divine Service for Noahides" (Fifth Edition).

Care has been taken that the prayers included here do not encroach on the spiritual heritage of the Jewish people, and there is no attempt made to establish additional obligations for Gentiles beyond the Torah-based Noahide Code.

The only story of the history of VOLKSWAGEN

This book starts with the early beginings of Ferdinand Porsch and relates the entire story of his career as an auto maker , then as the father of the VW beetle. This is the most complete accounting on the involvement of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party through the war years, and the saving of the factory by the British Army and Major Ivan Hirst. This book also tells the story of Heinz Nordhoff,President of VW from 1946 till his death in 1967. He is the man rsponsible for the VW Beetle becoming the most manufactured car in world history

A book for VW bug fans

Small wonder: The amazing story of the Volkswagen is a must for VW enthusiasts. It starts with the detailed recount of the genesis of the idea of a "peoples car" on both sides, the creator: Ferdinand Porsche and the force behind the construction: Adolf Hitler, and takes you up to what the VW company is today (depends on the edition you get how far into the history you get).
It is based on a great number of interviews of people who was very involved in all aspects of the development of the VW. Design, building, marketing and managing. It recounts the story of an idea, a car and a company that became the brand that we all recognize this days.
The book is a description of the history of the VW bug from the human side, not much about figures and numbers but a lot of human will.
I will recommend this book to all who want to read a warm history about the VW bug from a very human perspective. The car that almost never was but due to the triumph of the human spirit it is now an icon in history.

No doubt, it's a great read

I am 1/2 way through this book and it's a wonderful gem of history. Crazy that one Ally bomb in WWII turned out to be a dud probably saved the peoples car! I picked this up after the best VW mechanics in the NW, Porbug, tipped me off to the local Kombie VW Car Show. I just had to learn more about this small wonder.

Perhaps most important is that, as with the third edition, all of the software routines described in the book are now available for free in FORTRAN, PASCAL, C++, VBA, and MatLab. This makes the fourth edition an even more valuable text and superb reference.

Best book available on Astrodynamics

This is hands down the best book available on the subject of Astrodynamics. Over the years, I have read and owned several books on the subject but Vallado has an approach that is easy to understand. His use of practical examples provide built in test cases for application of the subject matter. A must have book for anyone interested in the subject.

One of the best

Coming to orbital mechanics from a celestial mechanics point of view, I didn't want to like this book. However, I would have to say that this is possibly the best orbital mechanics book available at this time. His derivations are some of the easiest to follow and most complete of any text. He does not gloss over intermediate steps in them. His discussions of perturbations are the most detailed I have seen. He gives considerable historical background and introduction to many chapters, enough so that you can pick up the thread of historical literature if you so desire. The book was published just as the new IAU 2000 frame of reference was being introduced, and it does cover that, as well as older FK5 and other systems. Pseudo-code algorithms are followed by worked examples, which is great for those of us who want to actually apply some of the theory. Of course, the book is Earth-satellite specific, so it is slanted toward that rather than celestial mechanics, but in some respects this is a plus. A great deal of modern, computerized analysis of satellite orbits is readily applicable to celestial mechanics, and Vallado covers it well. Other things are of less interest to a celestial mechanician - modelling of Earth's atmosphere and so forth, but this is still interesting. I have some minor nits: he uses the "little angular hat" vector notation rather than the bolded-character notation, which I prefer. Vallado writes in a folksy, first-persony sort of style, which is different than the almost pompous tone one gets in many celestial mechanics texts. As I said, minor.

Phyllis G. Tortora is Professor Emerita at Queens College, The City University of New York. She is co-author of The Fairchild Books Dictionary of Textiles, 8th Edition (Fairchild Books, 2013) and The Fairchild Books Dictionary of Fashion, 4th Edition (Fairchild Books, 2013).

Sara B. Marcketti is an associate professor at Iowa State University, USA, where she serves as an associate director in the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and formerly served as curator at the Textiles and Clothing Museum.

Good book with a few drawbacks

This book is often used as a textbook in costume history courses. As far as textbooks go, it is definitely one of the best. The text is quite dense, since it covers a lot of material in a limited space. Despite this, it is never dull. The authors are always careful to cite their sources, as well as explain why they support one point of view over others in those instances where several conflicting opinions exist. The text has several very useful features: extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter, as well as at the end of the book, are an excellent resource guide for more in-depth study; the visual summary tables at the end of each chapter review the basic progression of the silhouette within a period; and every chapter includes a section titled "Contemporary comments", which shows what the people who actually wore these garments thought about them. The careful attention the authors pay to the general historical, cultural, and political backgrounds of each period present fashion history as part of the greater framework of the history of Western society, which makes for an engaging read.

I stopped short of giving this text a 5-star rating for the following reasons:
1. Illustrations in the body of the text, primary research as well as drawings, are black and white. Color illustrations are confined to separate pages inserted in the middle of the book. The plates are too few and too small, and the color fidelity doesn't seem to be of exceptional quality. It seems that in an effort to keep costs down, the publisher sacrificed a vital part of the book. After all, when it comes to clothes, a picture often is worth a thousand words.
2. Whoever was in charge of making sure that the illustration and page numbers correspond to the ones cited, did an extremely poor job. What I mean is, when authors describe a particular garment, they'll refer to an illustration in parenthesis (see figure 8.10, page 182). Well, this illustration may or may not be on the page named, as well as the illustration may or may not be an example of what the authors are talking about. The correct illustration is never far (usually on the same page or the next page), and I have not yet encountered an instance where a cited illustration is absent entirely, but this discrepancy has occurred once or twice in almost every chapter. I place the full responsibility on the publishers, and would ask them in the future to be more careful when proofreading an expensive and otherwise admirable text.

Bottom line: buy this book if you intend to read it. If you are looking for a quick and clear visual reference of costumes through the ages, your money will be better spent elsewhere. Try The Complete History of Costume & Fashion: From Ancient Egypt to the Present Day

Decent textbook, lacking in pics

This is a textbook that I was required to purchase for a history class. The reading is full of info and seems to be laid out well. However, there are not very many pics to show what the text is explaining. There are some pics, but alot of the time you are left trying to imagine what the text is describing, and they are vague in their descriptions sometimes. I am learning a background of the history though.

Best comprehensive review book out there !

This book was recommended to me by a nursing professor. This is the newest edition so it wasn't highly reviewed on Amazon but from what I read on the previous editions reviews I decided to try it. I love that each section is broken down by systems. For example, the Adult Health unit is broken into respiratory, cardiac, hematology..etc. This aspect helps break the content up and I am able to focus in on what body system I am not the best with. I recommended this to all of my fellow nursing students as we prepare for the nclex.

This book has a lot of questions and rationales to help you understand. The online assess makes it better and helps you to pick as much as 265 questions (if you can handle it in one sitting ) I took my board and passed with 75 questions on july1st. I will suggest that nursing students buy this to help them prepare.
