Excellent Ghost Story for Kids Aged Seven to Ten

Brooke Rodgers and Zeke Matthews are excited to be starring in Woods Middle School's new play, "The Phantom." Both horror fans, Brooke and Zeke are thrilled that this year's play is supposed to be scary. The duo soon learn that their new show has never been successfully performed at the school. The play has a tragic history - and a curse on it! In the 1920's, on the first night the play was originally supposed to be performed, the boy playing the title character disappeared. Legend has it that the boy, now a phantom himself, will never let the play run. Soon, mysterious happenings plague the new production. Our heroic duo, along with new classmate, Brian Colson, are determined to uncover the truth behind the occurrences. When they sneak into the school at night, a mysterious man claiming to be the school's nighttime custodian confronts the students, but they soon learn that the school has no such employee. Along the way, the kids uncover a hidden tunnel beneath the auditorium's stage, and a long-forgotten room that is clearly occupied. Between Zeke's pranks, the actions of the strange man pretending to belong at the school, and the antics of a real ghost, Brooke must figure out what events have a reasonable explanation, and what can only be attributed to supernatural forces.
Fans of horror fiction and those who love the "Goosebumps" series in general may find "Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium" a little too tame. Rather than being a true horror story, it's more a ghost tale in the tradition of the "Vanishing Hitchhiker" urban legend. The kids are never in real danger from supernatural beings - it's regular human beings they have to watch! Regardless, this is a fun and entertaining ghost story with a nice ending. Kids who may find other "Goosebumps" books a little intense, but still enjoy a good scare, should truly love this book.
