A comprehensive introduction to the skills that students need to be successful digital photographers.
Digital Photography is unique among photography textbooks. Unlike other texts on the subject, Digital Photography combines technical lessons on using a digital camera and related technology with the creative and aesthetic concerns of producing beautiful images. The lessons are presented in a logical order and have been tested by the authors in their own classrooms. In the first section, students are introduced to the camera and its controls; then, to digital capture, editing and manipulating images, and digital output. The second part of the book teaches students how to make great images in the main genres of photography.
Diprose and Robins have the depth of practical knowledge that can only be gained from decades in the field and have distilled it into a series of helpful tip boxes that cover such topics as fitting a UV filter to your camera to enhance color quality, shooting from a camera that is “tethered” directly to a computer, and photographing in such difficult environments as desert and coastal areas. 500+ in color and b&w

Spare Yourself, Do NOT Buy this Book!
By AFriges
Oh My goodness, spare yourselves. Do NOT buy this book.
I teach at a college, and this is a "required" book for my students (department enforced). Not only do I tell them to save their money, but I wouldn't wish this book upon my enemy.
This book is a teacher's worst nightmare.
My initial response upon picking this book up was - it's a bit over the top, too much technical information that render useless unless you are a professional, and even if you are a professional - you wouldn't pick this book up because of how watered down this book is. It strives to be a photoshop book, but you can't get to know Photoshop with 20 pages of hints on random adjustment palettes.
Yet there is not enough detail about any of the thousands of topics they speak about. If I am getting overwhelmed as the teacher, I can't imagine how my students must feel upon opening up this book. Upon further investigation, I am quickly realizing that Graham Diprose & Jeff Robins spread themselves thin.
For any intro student, learning how to operate a camera on manual mode is one of the most difficult steps. This book not only misinforms, but doesn't even give side-by-side examples of what depth of field is - oh wait, but it will show you a side by side picture of RED EYE, with a photo right next to it of REDUCED RED EYE?!?!
MOST IMPORTANTLY: F16 - yea, in explaining the F-Stops/Aperture of a camera, this book just kinda forgot include it in the Aperture Diagram on page 51. I'm glad I still have Henry Hornstein's basic black and white text on me to scan his page of F-Stops (a book from over a decade ago, that explains photography in a much clearer simply informed way - he also has a newer digital photo version selling for under $20 on amazon - great intro textbook!).
Pages 308-310, okay, Diprose & Robins just randomly jump into photojournalism, and throw in some historic well-known photographs of war. It's no surprise that they include 2 images (Roger Fenton & Timothy O'Sullivan), and don't even touch on the topic of STAGEDNESS. Both of these images have been in hot debate (one of which was just proved false 2 years before this book was published), on ethics of truth in photojournalism - I'd think this is a pretty important topic, especially now that photoshop has made it easier to identify a liar in the news. This is where, as an educator, you have examples of photographers altering images centuries prior to anything digital, it's a pretty important topic... Diprose & Robins just go on speaking about these as fact of the matter war photographs. They describe how corpses were photographed & caused censorship in the following world war. BUT not that they were moved FOR the photograph or that the very first war image in Crimea ever taken was staged. uh, ok.
However, they find it necessary to go into detail about how Brady didn't receive his entire $100,000 reimbursement after shooting the Amer. Civil War. I guess that's more important than the topic of stagedness and/or journalistic integrity. C'MON!
I have been using this book in my class for only 2 weeks, and I'm sure its littered with more errors, but I'm not going to waste any more of my or my student's time. Please don't waste yours!

The book came just in time for my Tri-C college class and thus far it's proven to be very informative, especially the way they word it.
