Branden, who has already explored issues of self-esteem in The Psychology of Self-Esteem , LJ 2/1/70, and How To Raise Your Self-Esteem, LJ 3/15/87, argues that acquiring high self-esteem is essential to a person's survival in the world. His core assertions are believable enough , but he does not outline the six pillars until well into the book, which is too late to hook the reader. Ultimately, this is a repetitive, verbose, and somewhat rambling book. Better choices would be Richard Bednar's more scholarly Self-Esteem: Paradoxes and Innovations in Clinical Theory and Practice (American Psychological Assn., 1989) or, for public libraries, Matthew McKay, Self-Esteem (New Harbinger, 1992). Not recommended. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 10/15/93.

Branden practically invented the concept of self-esteem and was probably most responsible for promoting it in this country. His latest book is another solid effort that builds on his previous work. He defines the titular pillars as living consciously, self-acceptance, self-responsibility, self-assertiveness, living purposefully, and personal integrity, and he describes not only their importance but how to practice them. He also looks at self-esteem within the contexts of school, work, psychotherapy, and culture and how to develop it within each. His is a balanced book--part theory, part social commentary, part self-help--that is clear, well researched, and well grounded, a valuable, credible addition to the psychological self-help shelves. Great book

Definitely the best books on self-esteem I've ever read, the author really knows his stuff. He asserts that self-esteem is a by-product of practicing the 6 pillars of self-esteem which are: The practice of living consciously, The practice of self-acceptance, The practice of self-responsibility, The practice of self-assertiveness, The practice of living purposefully and The practice of personal integrity. One of my favorite quotes from the book is this simple yet powerful gem
"Self-esteem is an intimate experience. It occurs in our inner most being. It is what I think and feel about myself, not what someone else thinks and feels about me."
Along with the six pillars the author also covers self-esteem at work, parents effect on their childs self-esteem and also school teachers effect on a childs self-esteem. This is a great resource that will send you on many streams of introspective thought and contemplation. Be sure to have a handy notebook with you as you read to your jot down your thoughts.

a "must read" for people looking for self growth and self actualization

it was one of the best, if not the best, psychological books I've ever read. easy to comprehend and concise, yet to the point and practical. I have read "I'm OK, you're OK" and "staying OK" as well but they were not very practical and had more theoretical aspects. Then I read "Born to win" which covered almost the same topics but from a more practical point of view. this book looks at the human psyche form a different point of view which seems more logical and easier to understand. It still needs persistence of effort and time to put the exercises into practice but the path is more clearer than the other books. I strongly recommend this book.
