A SIGNIFICANT ARTICLE ILLUSTRATING FREUD'S IDEAS
By Steven H Propp
This book is a translation of an article Freud wrote for the Psychoanalytic Quarterly in 1936. Here are some representative quotations:
"In the case of repression the fact of crucial importance is that the ego is an organized entity, whereas the id is not; in fact, the ego is the organized part of the id."
"(In the case of little Hans) It is furthermore a complete triumph of repression that in the wording of the phobia there is no longer anything which hints at castration."
"I therefore maintain that the fear of death is to be regarded as an analogue of the fear of castration, and that the situation in which the ego reacts is the state of being forsaken or deserted by the protecting superego---by the powers of destiny---which puts an end to security against every danger."
"As the prototypic experience of such a sort, we think in the case of the human being of birth, and on this account we are inclined to see in the anxiety state a reproduction of the trauma of birth."
"Further than this, I must believe, our insight into the nature and causation of neurosis has not at the present time progressed."
