Truly "the solution" to your natural beauty pursuits

I love this book. I've been interested in making my own lotions and shampoo for a while, but it seemed really complicated. This book is so inspiring! It's the kind of book I love: friendly tone, lots of extra troubleshooting tips and advice in the sidebars, and well-designed for easy reading comprehension. Most of the recipes offer variations for different skin types -- oily, dry, mature, acne-prone -- and suggestions for different essential oils and hydrosols (the book also has a great glossary that explains what those are!) to make your homemade beauty products smell good. This book also has beautiful photography. It makes all the recipes look seriously good enough to eat :)

Mary Helen Leonard is a great writer and a real expert on natural body care. I have been reading her blog for years and am so glad she's finally got a book! I'm so excited to try making her facial cream recipe and bar shampoo recipe very soon. (Just as soon as I order the ingredients from the list of online resources in the back of the book!)

This book is so incredibly beautiful. Several cuts above the hippy dippy natural beauty selections you come across in the health food store, The Natural Beauty Solution is a chic lifestyle book that matches Mary Helen Leonard's signature look and feel of approachable sophistication. Longtime fans of her blog already know and love her writing style and clean aesthetic. It's wonderful to have a piece of that in print, and hopefully this is just the first of many books to come. Highly recommended for anyone looking to embark on a cleaner, more natural lifestyle and for collectors of beautifully photographed books. A fantastic book by any measure!

DIY Beauty at Its Best

I've know Mary Helen for ages as my little sister's best friend and the homemade beauty products I've bought from her over the years have been great - they work, they smell good, and they are PRETTY :-) I ordered her book and read through it before making up my mind about it (which I have). This is really a bible for the person looking not just to make but to understand natural beauty products. The reference material in it, such as tables of natural oils showing their properties in beauty products, elevate the book above the level of a typical DIY recipe collection. The photography is amazing, not just beautiful but compelling - the pictures really make you want to go out and start making soap. Mary Helen's writing is engaging, you get the little bit of kitch that she brings to all of her endeavors. Get two copies - one to use and get dirty, and one to stay beautiful on your coffee table.

About the Author
Robert D. Hare, PhD, has conducted influential research on psychopathy for over 25 years. Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and the developer of one of the world’s most widely used tools for assessing psychopathy, Dr. Hare is the author of over 100 professional articles and several books. In recognition of the enormous impact that his work on psychopathy has had worldwide, the Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy named their lifetime achievement award after him. In 2005, he was the first recipient of the R.D. Hare Lifetime Achievement Award.

Do you think someone close to you is off in a way that you can't seem to pin down? read this book.

I barely escaped alive and with professional help identified her behavior. I was depressed within one year of meeting her and it became worse over 16 years. At the end when she had found her next victim I was gaslighted to the brink of suicide. Her first husband died unexpectedly after 21 years of marriage. Later investigation revealed his spiraling depression and poor health just prior to his death. Her children's pets always disappeared and then after her daughter was grown and tired of her pets, good old mom would take them away.
She was a very attractive women and while traveling for business almost every week it was discovered later that she would have sex with just about anyone. At 60 she looked 40 and her next victim was a 40 year old attorney. By the time she picked her new victim after 16 years with me, I had lost a Florida beach house and close to one million in savings. That does not include the gifts of valuable items over the years. Discovered later that she lost all of the jewelry because it held no value to her, it was just a reminder of the control she had over me.

Read this book. I came out alive barely. My depression is gone. I can't even believe how much control she had over me and the level of manipulation I experienced.

The information provided in these chapters is informative and useful, but the descriptions of the behavior of psychopaths ...

There are moments when Dr. Robert Hare's Without Conscience blisters with insight. Unfortunately, there are also several instances in which he seems to beg for attention and cater to public fascination for villainy. Hare draws heavily on Hervey Cleckley's work (most notably from his book The Mask of Sanity) to develop a Psychopathy Checklist which he uses to diagnose the disorder. He spends the vast majority of the book describing the components of his Checklist and offering examples from his own interviews as well as more famous cases. The information provided in these chapters is informative and useful, but the descriptions of the behavior of psychopaths aren't particularly innovative, since by Hare's own admission, Cleckley described the same behaviors in his patients fifty years earlier.

Hare offers more value with his descriptions of the latest research on how psychopaths' brains actually function, and how they think and use language. He weighs the merits and shortcomings of the latest theories on the origins and development of psychopathy, and offers the intriguing hypothesis that individuals born with the makeup of a psychopath will not change, although the quality of their upbringing may affect whether their disorders express themselves through violence and sexual deviance or less physically harmful behavior such as deception or fraud. He also proposes further research into the treatment of this disorder, rightly observing that such interventions will likely not help psychopaths develop empathy, though they may lead them to realize and assume responsibility for the destructiveness of their behavior.

However, despite Hare's assertion that the vast majority of psychopaths are not violent serial offenders, Without Conscience is littered with descriptions of killers like John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy. Even though these criminals may exemplify some of the traits of psychopaths, by Hare's own admission, he never interviewed them himself or diagnosed them with the disorder. At times it seems Hare is writing merely to maintain the attention of those readers who picked up his book in an airport after following a serial killer manhunt on the news. At one point, he even finishes a story about a psychopath who served a short prison sentence with the warning "he may now be in your community."

All in all, Without Conscience offers a solid introduction into the basics of the psychopathic disorder. Readers who would prefer a more scholarly treatment should look elsewhere, but this book is short, simplified and entertaining enough to capture the interest of most readers unfamiliar with the subject.

The personality of a psychopath is very well explained in this book. These individuals have no humanity at all within them, yet they are extremely charming and highly manipulative that they become a serious threat to the average person. They also very easily manipulate the system against the victim and people in the legal system are totally clueless of what is a psychopath and how they operate as they are not psychologists and even psychologists themselves get manipulated!
Psychopaths are excellent story tellers and amazing actors and actresses their entire goal is to manipulate everyone for their own gain.

Second book of the Templar Chronicles, but even better.

A Scream of Angels is the perfect follow-up to the start of a great series - The Templar Chronicles. If you haven't read the first book titled "The Heretic", do yourself a favor and start there. A Scream of Angels is a great read on its own, but starting from the beginning of the series will give you the backstory about the main character, Commander Cade Williams of the mysterious Templar Order:

Book 1: The Heretic (The Templar Chronicles)

Cade's wife died tragically at the hands of a supernatural being called the Adversary, but despite her death, she continues to play a large role in his life. Cade's own unique abilities acquired from this same encounter have allowed him to follow his wife into another realm called The Beyond. His desperate hope to find her is both his strength and his weakness, and figures heavily in the main storyline - a mission to investigate an old military base in the desert. The first team sent to investigate was slaughtered by an unseen enemy, so the elite Echo team headed by Commander Williams is called into action.

The story takes on some interesting twists and turns, with plenty of mystery, horror, and action throughout. You won't be disappointed.

I'm a big fan of the series.

I've read all of the Templar Chronicle Books and have thoroughly enjoyed them all, especially A Scream of Angels. Cade is on a mission to revenge the death of his wife and he does not let anything or anybody stand in his way. Trust me, while searching for his nemeses, the Adversary, he encounters supernatural forces that rival the no-goodness of some of his earthy catholic brethren.

The author is one of my new favorites. His books are vivid, creative, intense, and I'm unable to put them down until I finish.

More Action Oriented Than Book One

That's not necessarily a bad thing. However, I noticed book one had more mystery to it while this was more on the edge of your seat action. I really enjoyed it though and it was hard to put down. Made the mistake of reading it in my yard swing yesterday. Not sure how long I was reading, but I'm sunburned now. I really enjoy the background plot concerning the Adversary, while giving us a good story for the present also.

A must for any teacher

I love Caught'ya grammar. I have used it everyday for the past 8 years I have taught. I have never used the 2nd grade version (bought it for a co-worker) but I have used the first, third grade, and fourth grade stories. This is the only grammar/editing program I have used that has had such an impact on my students' learning. I work at a Title 1 school where half of my class began the year 1 or more grades below grade level. It is December and they are using quotation marks, commas, and indentions with ease. When doing the first grade story, I bought a ball "Eggbert" (the main character in the story) for my classroom. In the story, Eggbert is a ball that bounces by himself. Every night after the students left, I moved Eggbert around the room. They loved looking for him everyday and it made them even more excited about the story.

Update: I used the second grade version this past year, and it was just as good as the other versions. I bought a stuffed skunk for the classroom to go along with the story, and the students loved it. I sent Petra (the skunk) home with them and they had to write about their adventures. Adding this element made them even more excited about the GRAMMAR story. Yes, students excited about grammar.

Excellent and Effective Grammar Learning System

This is an excellent approach for teaching grammar to reluctant writers. The story is cute and funny and it's the first thing my students want to do in the morning. As the teacher, you write the sentences on the board incorrectly. The students "catch" the grammar errors and then write the corrected sentences in their jornal, in a sense, writing their own copy of the story. The errors, at first, are simply capitalization mistakes and missing punctuation. As the lessons progress and the students gain confidence, the concepts of paragraphs, comma usage, and quotes marks are introduced. This grammar system is a great foundation builder that, I believe, will stay with the student for years to come. I can't say enough good things about the author and creator of this system. She's brilliant and genius and she's created something that really works for all students, no matter their learning level.

By rearranging the matter on the page, using a line extra on each, and a greater number of words on a line, by setting the bibliography and notes in smaller type, and by omitting the A ppendix, it has been found possible to print the text of this new edition on 626 pages, as compared with 594 pages of the first edition. The system being elastic it was possible to place most of the additional matter within the same sections and under the same headings as before. Some of the points treated are, however, so entirely new that it was necessary to deal with them under separate headings, and within separate sections. The reader will easily distinguish them, since, to avoid disturbing the arrangement of topics, these new sections have been inserted between the old ones, and numbered as the sections preceding them, but with the addition of the letters a, b, c.

After having seen numerous unedited scanned versions of no use of Oppenheim's Treatises, it was a great delight to get this proper copy of the work made of a library copy of the book. Highly recommended for scholarly use and I wish that also other old editions of this masterwork would receive similar treatment which saves them for further scholarly use. This is a proper and usable copy, not one of those fraudulently made unedited scanned versions of no use. Order and use, with satisfaction!
