Victorian prejudices in full blossom

Froude visited the West Indies five decades after the abolition of slavery determined to find dullness, decay, and racial inferiority. His prejudgments were satisfied in every way. West Indian blacks were inferior to "the Zulus and Caffres" he had previously encountered in South Africa. Haitians undoubtedly practiced cannibalism, determined on the basis of two two-hour visits to that island. Slavery must have been a good thing, since it taught the blacks of Jamaica politeness. Bears should be introduced into the Blue Mountains of Jamaica to vary the fauna, and it would be no great loss if they should eat a black child from time to time. Not surprisingly, the very first black child he encountered, on the voyage out, resembled a monkey in the zoo. The African-descended people of the British colonies of the Caribbean could not ever govern themselves, even though the Chief Justice of Barbados, whom he met, was one of those people, and clearly, even to his prejudiced eyes, competent.

About the Author

Linda Weiner, MSW, LCSW, is co-director of the Institute for Sexual & Relationship Therapy & Training, providing sex and relationship therapy, supervision, and training. She is a speaker, writer, adjunct professor at the Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis, and was formerly a research and clinical associate at Masters & Johnson Institute. Ms. Weiner is a diplomate in clinical social work, a certified diplomate in sexology (American Board of Sexology), and is certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists as a sex therapist, supervisor, and CE provider.

Constance Avery-Clark, PhD, is co-director of the Institute for Sexual & Relationship Therapy & Training, an AASECT-certified diplomate in sex therapy and CE provider, and a certified diplomate in Sexology, American Board of Sexology. She has been a practicing licensed psychologist in Boca Raton, Florida, for 28 years. Dr. Avery-Clark has one doctoral degree in clinical psychology and another in psychology-Jungian Studies. She was formerly a research and clinical associate at Masters & Johnson Institute. She specializes in treating sexual, relationship, and meaning-of-life concerns, and has published and lectured nationally, including an appearance on the Today Show.

An absolute must for anyone with a 911 in the garage

One of the best 911 books out there. Suprisingly clear and easy to read. If you've never torn down your 911 motor because you always thought, "I'd should leave it to the professionals" read this book. It will show you, with lots of great pics, how to do everything in a step by step way and give you the confidence to tackle your motor. I read this book then bought five more for my other 911 buddies and have since tackled complete rebuilds. If you only buy two book, it should be this one and '101 Projects for your 911'.

Pictures galore!

This is a great book for the enthusiast or for those with an interest in Porsches. I rebuilt a 911 engine without this resource; it would have been so much easier and faster with this book as a reference. I bought this as a gift for someone that acquired a 78 911SC -- he thinks the pictures are exceptional.

About the Author

Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, ABCN, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Barkley has published numerous books and five assessment scales, plus more than 260 scientific articles and book chapters on ADHD, executive functioning, and childhood defiance. He is also the editor of the newsletter The ADHD Report. A frequent conference presenter and speaker who is widely cited in the national media, he is past president of the Section on Clinical Child Psychology (the former Division 12) of the American Psychological Association, and of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology. Taking Charge of ADHD

Excellent book on ADHD. It really helped us understand our grandson's behaviors. It gave us great recommendations as to ways we could help him and make all our lives much more enjoyable.

Not crazy about this book

As a parent of a newly diagnosed ADHD child, I purchased this book because it was recommended to me. The book does give very helpful facts and information; however, I feel like it has a negative undertone and lacks compassion. I have read several other ADHD books because naturally my first instinct was to educate myself once my son was diagnosed. The author focuses a lot on the negative aspects of ADHD and set backs. I got halfway through the book and had to stop reading it for awhile because it was so discouraging. Maybe the newer third edition of this book is better, who knows. I do like the fact that the author pushes you to be an advocate for your child which is very important. There are more positive books and resources (yes, that are scientific based) out there that are available for parents.

Taking Charge of ADHD

I can't begin to tell you how many books I have read on ADHD since my daughter was diagnosed back in 2005. I can't even begin to tell you how many books are out there that have totally false and misleading information. What I can tell you, however, is that Dr. Barkley really gets it! I mean he really has studied this disorder and will even admit that even he doesn't know everything about the disorder but he does his best to shed light on a very complex disorder and gives many parents hope in a struggle that is never-ending. When my daughter's therapist first recommended this book, I will be honest, I thought "oh great another self help guru that is going to lead me nowhere" but I bought the book per her recommendation and decided to give the book a try, albeit with a very narrow-minded attitude. Since I have gotten this book, I have had several 'aha' moments. It has even helped me to understand things about my daughter that I had no idea were related to her condition. Dr. Barkley is even wise enough to admit that he doesn't know everything and that you, the parent, know far more about your child than any 'professional' out there. I strongly recommend this book to any parent who has a child with ADHD or anyone struggling with the disorder themselves.

RICHARD SELCER is a native Fort Worther who has taught in his hometown for more than forty years. He holds a PhD from TCU, and has authored ten books on Western, military, and cultural history. He has taught at Tarrant County College, Dallas County College, and Weatherford College.

OUTSTANDING AFRO-AMERICAN HISTORY BOOK of Fort Worth, Texas

It is an excellent book, very easy to read, and well organized. It also has a wealth of information covering the Black & White History of Fort Worth, Texas. The Notes, Index, and Bibliography are outstanding, as the publisher states on the cover, "the later make it appealing as a school text as well as a book for the general reader".

The First Couple of Cruising

The true story of a small boat voyage across the Atlantic Ocean during the summer of 1877 by a couple from New Bedford, MA. It may be the first voyage of pleasure by any couple ever. "Pleasure" in the sense that it was not a trading voyage.

The story begins in 1858 with Thomas Crapo's running away to sea at age 14, whaling, jumping ship, a US Navy enlistment, some time with the US Army during the Civil War, work on trading schooners and eventually ascending to the captaincy of his own ships. For reasons not fully explained, he decides to have a 20 foot decked over whaleboat style cat-schooner built for a trip from New Bedford to England. No one had ever before done such a thing to our knowledge. Just before departure, his wife, Joanna, says she's going to. With masterful understatement he allows that if he'd known she was interested, he'd have made the boat a bit bigger. The transit took almost two months of hard going. The story is well told in every respect.

A very modern cruising couple aspect is that after arriving in England they went on a tour to promote their adventure by displaying their boat and answering questions. Upon returning to the USA, they did the same thing, exhibiting the vessel and answering questions from the public. Every thing they did was a first. The Crapos preceded ocean voyagers Slocum, Blackburn, and Voss by a couple of decades. Except for Slocum's sail back from South America with his wife and kids, there are no parallels. In many ways Crapos were the ancient equivalent to some of today's most well respected cruising couples. Couples such as the Hiscocks, Irvings, and Pardys arrived on the scene much later.

Missing from the book is some helpful material such as maps or a time line. The editing is pretty good with a few easy to get past errors. The cover picture is completely incorrect. Those aside, anyone who is interested in origins of a couple "gone for a cruise" should read this true tale. In other respects, it is a seafaring lifestyle story from the last part of the 19th century.

I enjoyed the story as a companion to the many other couples gone cruising books.

If you enjoy The Heart of the Sea... Here's another whale tale and then some.

Love the book. The original has been in the family for generations. Capt Crapo was my great great something Uncle. His wife Johanna is listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as the first woman to sail across the Atlantic in a small boat which is in this epic. John wrote the book. I do not know what William Cowin's role was although the Cowin name is in he family way back. As I understand it,

Enjoy the book. Glad to see it kept alive. Its real America.
