Disappointing and riddled with errors

As an instructor, I must say that this third edition is very disappointing. Positive features of the new version include beautiful photos, some interesting National Geographic videos, and an improved pre-unit that describes the ideal paragraph.

However, this is a very slapdash book that has myriad typographic errors that had NOT been corrected before this third printing and a poorly thought out workbook that omits regular and meaningingful vocabulary practice. Business letters and emails are shown with indentations while academic-style paragraphs lack indentations and are single-spaced. The student book does not include the audio scripts at the back of the book as is the custom, and students must go online to access audio.

I was very disappointed in this series, and I will look to Cambridge or other careful publishers for better classroom materials in the future.

Excellent information on the different schools, however, previous editions for prior years have provided more info on students that apply and get accepted as far as grades, states they come from, etc. So I was a bit disappointed that this edition did not include any of this extra info as that is what I wanted it for.

This is the best book I have ever read for bridging the gap ...

This is the best book I have ever read for bridging the gap between classical and statistical thermodynamics. It also includes lots of footnotes and anecdotes/quotes from the scientists involved (and great minds such as Feynman). It is a great resource if you want to improve your understanding of the roots and use of the many thermodynamics equations that are tossed about in a general chemistry class. If you studied thermodynamics at university and, like me, got through by memorizing and manipulating the equations, rather than actually understanding the underlying models, then I highly recommend this book. I only wish I had discovered it when I was taking these classes for the first time! Some texts are dry, formulaic and and abstruse, others are popular science and water down the principles by trying to draw tenuous analogies. This is the perfect hybrid of rigor and accessibility. I have ordered a hardback copy (after borrowing a paperback) and will treasure and learn from this for years to come. Absolute magic!

Pretty good in places

I used this book (as one of several) while teaching undergrad. thermo in the seventies and eighties. In particular, I liked the simple discussion of the second law as the reason for the reversible ordering of water into ice at the freezing temperature.

Physical chemist? A must-have read!

This book is an excellent read and one that is highly recommended for physical chemistry. Be prepared to work, though. As it is an older book, it does a lot less hand-holding, but the content and presentation is supreme!

Arias well arranged for piano

These opera arias are for the piano, not for accompanying actual singing, of course you can sing-along. They are correctly described as intermediate advanced. There is another book in the series for easy intermediate playing on the same Arias. Looks the same with the same arias but with a green cover. I recommend them both if you are starting on the piano and love opera.

Worthy Transcriptions

The full title of this book is Opera at the Piano: 74 Favorite Selections from 45 Operas Transcribed for Intermediate to Advanced Piano Solo. The title is quite accurate in that nearly all of the selections included are well known "favorite selections." Included are: "Celesta Aida" and the "Triumphal March" from AIDA, "Una voce poco fa" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, four selections each from LA BOHEME, CARMEN, MAGIC FLUTE and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, three selections each from DON GIOVANNI, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, MANON LESCAUT, RIGOLETTO, TOSCA, LA TRAVIATA, and one or two selections each from: MARTHA, I PAGLIACCI, HANSEL UND GRETEL, LOUISE, LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, LA RONDINE, SAMSON ET DALILA, Il TROVATORE, etc. As would be implied by any listing of "favorites," the time period covered is basically Mozart through Puccini, with a few earlier chestnuts thrown in (a couple of selections from Handel's SERSE and GIULIO CESARE and "When I am laid in earth" from Purcell's DIDO AND AENEAS). The book includes transcriptions of instrumental works as well as vocal works -- the Intermezzo from Macagni's CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, the Waltzes from Strauss' DER ROSENKAVALIER, the Mediation from Massanet's THAIS, and overtures to Rossini's GUILLAUME TELL and Glinka's RUSLAN AND LYUDMILA. None of the well known instrumental music of Wagner is included and his presence in this volume is limited to two selections from TANNHAUSER. Included at the beginning of the book are short paragraph-length synopses of all of the operas represented which would no doubt be helpful to those unfamiliar with all of the operas represented. The transcriptions are pianistic and work well at the keyboard. None of the transcribers are identified. The pieces are of medium to advanced difficulty. These are not transcriptions in the sense of the virtuosic Lisztian operatic transcriptions where Liszt wrote new compositions based on operatic melodies. Instead, these are straightforward faithful piano transcriptions of works originally written for voice and orchestra. It is unlikely that any of these pieces would be included on recital programs. I see the main function of these pieces as giving opera loving pianists hours of pleasure playing through them for him/herself and maybe for friends.

Excellent transcriptions

Unless you are a virtuoso pianist and can handle the Liszt transcriptions of opera, this is a fantastic way to play some of the greatest opera music on solo piano.
I particularly like the "Revenge Song" from "The Magic Flute." These are for intermediate to intermediate-advanced (you can play some Beethoven Sonatas, for example) and deliver a lot of pleasing sound for the effort.

A non-partisan, political lesbian romance novel? Yep and it's fantastic!

I totally agree with the first reviewer, MK Burgess "Devlyn"; I loved this book! It was as laugh-out-loud funny as Ms. Moody's first book and filled with as much sexual chemistry as her second one without all of the tiresome Old Hollywood-period name-dropping. The best part of the book for me, apart from the humour and great chemistry between the leads, is how fairly and honestly the author portrays both the Republican and Democratic parties, without unduly demonizing either... refreshing indeed in this sub-genre. Also very well done, is the handling of the diversity/ multicultural aspects of the story without the heavy-handed use of token foreign language phrases, i.e. yes, we know that Bijal is of South Asian heritage, but she grew up in the US and so, duh, the only likely reason why she'd be using Hindi words here and there with people other than her family (and maybe her S. Asian friends) would be so the author can remind us of her ethnicity. Brava Ms. Moody, I look forward to more of your contemporary romances!

Witty and charming; a delightful read 3-1/2 stars

This is the first book I've read by this author, and it promises to be the first of many if her work here is any representation of her talent. I really enjoyed her use of words, the quick and entertaining banter her characters engaged in, and the balance and humanity she brought to everyday interactions amid extraordinary campaign-trail experiences.

The story and romance revolves around Bijal Roa--a conservative excited at her first staff position in her chosen political field, trying to get a mayor in Virginia elected to Congress--and Congresswoman Colleen O'Bannon--an out (and outspoken) lesbian running for her first re-election in a typically "red" state. Their meet cute is amusing, and they have good chemistry and strike sparks from the start. The author does a really good job at bringing up the politics enough that we all recognize them, and trying to cover both sides of the spectrum, without being preachy. And at the end of the day, you respected both characters as Bijal stands up against chasing the party fringes, and Colleen bucks her own party, opting for clarity versus back-room deals. You saw as the reader how great they could be together, and just wanted them to be happy (together).

Why only 3-1/2? Sometimes the book was a bit awkward. Was it pacing? I'm not sure. It's difficult for me to pinpoint or articulate. It also occasionally toes over the line into ridiculous. Still, I'd give this book a pretty high recommendation. It has some substance and weight, and talks about important things, without losing that timelessness and universality of things like the way we wish our politicians and representatives would say what they mean. It's serious at times without losing an overall sense of the fun of falling in love. It doesn't get bogged down in its own importance.

If you're interested in politics at all, read it. If you're only interested in the romance, still read it. Both aspects are well done.

Romance, humor and serious thoughts: Excellent!

This is one heck of a book - and hands-off if you want to read it anywhere where you can't chuckle, laugh or smile along (no reading at boring meetings e.g.). One sideline throughout the book (including the title) is "pun intended". So this is a romance full of humor, gleefull bantering --- and it is smoking hot as well with great characters (who have character to top it off - or not). Nothing like an illicit attraction and two people trying to fight it to add more spice!And you got to love all those made-up names .
Under the admittedly glorious veneer of light, funny exchanges -- there are serious topics seriously addressed like being out at the workplace, how to live with integrity in not so easy settings and sharing /not-sharing the same values.
A thoroughly enjoyable book.

helpful if you've watched some of her dharma talks

I didn't like this book at first. I still think it's hard to understand, if you haven't listened to some of her talks online. There are several at her website. Once you've seen those, the book makes more sense.

For example, I didn't understand what she meant by "groundlessness" until I watched some of the videos on her website. Her interview with Bill Moyers is particularly helpful in that regard.

I like the book better now that I've watched some of the dharma talks. By itself, it's kind of incomprehensible and even off-putting.

This is a manual to live by - it was suggested to me as part of learning about Gestalt Awareness Practice, and it is a veritable manual on the Practice. I love Pema's practical and gentle way of being in the world and her encouragement that we all can just be. There is nothing to fix.

One of the most helpful books that I have ever read. It does not seem like a self help book at all. It really helped me change my perspective. Not only did it help me get through a really tough time, but it helped me learn to use those hard moments to grow and thrive. I highly recommend!
