The single most useful book I've found for spacecraft and mission design.

As a graduate student in space architecture, this is the single most useful book I have found for designing human missions and spacecraft. It is an extraordinary collection of valuable information.

Part textbook, part reference manual, the book includes both descriptive text and a wealth of numerical data. It is broken up into 31 chapters, each about 20 to 30 pages long. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of human spaceflight, such as structures, power systems, crew accommodations, or planetary surface vehicles, and each is written by one or more experts in the relevant field.

Although the book is designed for people who work with spacecraft for a living, it is very accessible. Anyone with a good grasp of algebra and a strong interest in spaceflight should be able to follow most of it.

If I could change one thing about this book, it would be to make it a hardbound edition. My copy is rapidly becoming dog-eared. It's just so blasted useful...

Ian Newton is an ornithologist, applied scientist, and leading expert on bird ecology and biogeography specializing in finches, waterfowl, and birds of prey—especially the sparrowhawk. He graduated from Bristol University and gained his doctorate in finch behavior at Oxford, followed by research on bullfinch damage in orchards. He joined the NERC in 1967, initially studying population ecology of geese and finches, followed by the impact of pesticides on birds of prey. He�is the author�of the�New Naturalist volume, Finches.

Best intro to peace studies I've seen

I just read what may be the best introduction to peace studies I’ve ever seen. It’s called Peace Lessons, and is a new book by Timothy Braatz. It’s not too fast or too slow, neither obscure nor boring. It does not drive the reader away from activism toward meditation and “inner peace,” but begins with and maintains a focus on activism and effective strategy for revolutionary change in the world on the scale that is needed. As you may be gathering, I’ve read some similar books about which I had major complaints.

No doubt there are many more, similar books I haven’t read, and no doubt most of them cover the basic concepts of direct, structural, and cultural violence and nonviolence. No doubt many of them review the 20th century history of nonviolent overthrows of dictators. No doubt the U.S. civil rights movement is a common theme, especially among U.S. authors. Braatz’s book covers this and other familiar territory so well I was never tempted to set it down. He gives some of the best answers available to the usual questions from the dominant war-based culture, as well: “Would you shoot a crazed gunman to save your grandma?” “What about Hitler?”

Braatz introduces basic concepts with crystal clarity, and then proceeds to illuminate them with a discussion of the battle of Little Bighorn from a peace perspective. The book is worth acquiring for this alone, or for the similarly insightful discussion of John Brown’s use of nonviolent strategies in combination with his use of violence. Brown established a constructive project, a cooperative interracial non-patriarchal community. Brown had concluded that only the death of white men could awaken Northerners to the evil of slavery, prior to his failure to flee Harper’s Ferry. Read Braatz on Brown’s Quaker roots before assuming you understand his complexity.

A summary of Braatz on the “But what about Hitler?” question might go something like this. When Hitler first asphyxiated mentally ill Germans, a few prominent voices raised in opposition led to the cancellation of that program, known as T4. When most of the German population was displeased by the Crystal Night attacks on Jews, those tactics were abandoned. When non-Jewish wives of Jewish men began demonstrating in Berlin to demand their release, and others joined in the demonstrations, those men and their children were released. What might a larger, better planned nonviolent resistance campaign have accomplished? It was never attempted, but it is not hard to imagine. A general strike had reversed a rightwing coup in Germany in 1920. German nonviolence had ended a French occupation in the Ruhr region in the 1920s, and nonviolence would later remove a ruthless dictator from power in East Germany in 1989. In addition, nonviolence proved moderately successful against the Nazis in Denmark and Norway with little planning, coordination, strategy, or discipline. In Finland, Denmark, Italy, and especially Bulgaria, and to a lesser extent elsewhere, non-Jews successfully resisted German orders to kill Jews. And what if the Jews in Germany had understood the danger and nonviolently resisted, magically managing to use techniques developed and understood in the decades that followed, and the Nazis had begun to slaughter them in the public streets rather than in distant camps? Would millions have been saved by the reaction of the general public? We cannot know because it wasn’t tried.

I might add, from a complementary perspective: Six months after Pearl Harbor, in the auditorium of the Union Methodist Church in Manhattan, the executive secretary of the War Resisters League Abraham Kaufman argued that the United States needed to negotiate with Hitler. To those who argued that you couldn’t negotiate with Hitler, he explained that the Allies were already negotiating with Hitler over prisoners of war and the sending of food to Greece. For years to come, peace activists would argue that negotiating a peace without loss or victory would still save the Jews and save the world from the wars that would follow the current one. Their proposal was not tried, millions died in the Nazis’ camps, and the wars that followed that one have not ended.

But belief in the inevitability of war can end. One can easily understand, as Braatz notes, how wiser behavior in the 1920s and 1930s would have avoided World War II.

Braatz’s history of post-World War II nonviolent action is well done, including his analysis of how the end of the Cold War allowed successes in the Philippines and Poland to spark a trend that earlier successes had not. I do think that the discussion of Gene Sharp and the color revolutions could have benefitted from some critical consideration of the role played by the U.S. government — something done well in Ukraine: Zbig’s Grand Chessboard and How the West Was Checkmated. But after initially labeling several actions successes, Braatz does later get around to qualifying that label. In fact, he is very critical of most nonviolent successes as insufficiently correcting structural and cultural violence, effecting only superficial change by overthrowing leaders.

He’s also quite critical of the U.S. civil rights movement, not in a childishly arrogant sense of looking down on any participants, but as a strategist hunting for lost opportunities and lessons going forward. Lost opportunities, he thinks, include the March on Washington and a couple of different moments in the Selma campaign, including the moment when King turned the march around on the bridge.

This book would make a terrific series of discussions in a course on possibilities for peace. As such a course, however, I think it lacks — as virtually the entire academic discipline of peace studies lacks — a substantial analysis of the problem of twenty-first century U.S. wars and global militarism — where this unprecedented war machine is, what drives it, and how to undo it. Braatz does, however, offer the idea that many of us had at the time and some (such as Kathy Kelly) acted on: What if in the lead up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq a huge peace army including famous figures from the West and around the world had made its way to Baghdad as human shields?

We could use that now in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Ukraine, Iran, and various parts of Africa and Asia. Libya three years ago was a stellar opportunity for such an action. Will the war machine present a better one, with sufficient warning? Will we be ready to act on it?

Excellent for beginners

This book is one of the best written ones. It covers everything. I own the 1986 edition. It contains everything you need top understand the nature of the fluid flow past a body.It covers airfoils, finite wing, compressible and incompressible flows, shock waves, boundary layers, turbulence. It doesn't mention complex variable methods and Joukowsky transformation, it is true, but it does a very good job in the other tasks. Personally, I think everyone involved in aerodynamics should own it. It is a good introductory to mid-level book as a reference one.

A well written introductory book on aerodynamics . Advanced printing technology also adds to the book`s qualities .However , this is not the book for someone who wants to excel at aerodynamics .Like other more recent books ,It aims for medicore level.For example, there are no expansions of advanced topics for the curious student.Also a subject of practical and historical importance like complex potential & conformal mapping is omitted. Summary : If you are new to Fluid Dynamics ,buy it .If you intend to be a real scientist ,you should look for Karamcheti for the incompressible part ,and Shapiro for the compressible part.

Although significantly older than this text, I would suggest that readers look for a copy of 'The Aerodynamic Design of Aircraft' by Dietrich Kuchemann (Pergamon, 1976). Although not particularly up to date in terms of the advent of complex CFD methods, Kuchemann's text is an essential summary of the progress of analytical aerodynamics, and it's experimental underpinnings, from Gottingen in the Ludwig Prandtl era, through to the technology of the mid 1970s.

Yet another winner from Michael Kelley...

Yet another superb title from Mr. Kelley. This title covers a lot of ground in statistics, certainly all of the major topics in a (non-calculus requirement) statistics course are covered here. Much better written and much more readable than the text used in my class. Definitely aimed at a first statistics course (eg. stats for business or humanities for students that have not taken calculus yet). Teachers would do well to replace the (poorly written and expensive) textbooks with this book + practice problems.

As with any of the Humongous books, the way to get the most out of this book is to tackle this with paper and pencil at hand, and work out the problems, then compare solutions.

+ The second half of the book (Inferential statistics) is particularly strong. The authors explain the details behind hypothesis testing, computing confidence intervals etc very well. They don't take a "plug this into your TI-83/84 calculator to compute a p-value" approach. They take the longer route of lucidly explaining the computation that goes into these problems - so students working through the examples understand the process and rationale behind the computations.

- I felt that the probability chapters were weaker, but in fairness, the probability + distributions topics will require a book by themselves to do justice to. Also it is hard to do much with distributions without calculus. This does not detract from the value of this book.

It is a no-brainer buy at around 15 bucks.

Only for the experienced.

I purchased this book because it has been 10 years since I took Stats and Probability, and I needed to brush up for a graduate test. After reading through the first section, I had no idea what was going on. While the book does show you how to do it, it doesn't explain when to do it that way and why. I became more confused about stats and probability after reviewing the book because just when I thought I understood when to use a particular procedure, the book would change it up on me. It would likely be an ok book for those who just want additional practice, but the book doesn't lay out the basics for you, so you had better know what you're doing.
Also, the formatting of the book was not neat and tidy - there were little 'fun facts' in the margins that I rarely found helpful and more often found distracting or confusing. The text formatting/problem set-up was also very boring.
Overall, I wish I had gone with something else...it's too bad they dont make a "Forgotten Statistics" (like the book "Forgotten Calculus" by Bleau). I dont think I'd recommend this book as a review aid unless you're experienced.

I wish this was my statistics textbook

Statistics and Calculus are probably the two most useful mathematical concepts known to man. They are used extensively not only in math, engineering, and science, but also in business, finance, and economics as well.

Statistics allows one to derive relationships between data sets and derive future probabilities and, therefore, predictive abilities. If you want to predict the future within reason, then all you need are strong statistics (sometimes calculus) knowledge and plethora of accurate and relevant data.

This book unleashes the power of statistics unto the reader. The explanations are the clearest I have read and the most user friendly. Unfortunately, most of the statistics books are very dry and difficult to read. This book tries to counter that trend. Although statistics is still a dry topic, the format of this book, with its many captions, tries to make it interesting. It views statistics from the reader's perspective and tries to fill in the knowledge gap a reader might have about statistics as each chapter progresses. It is very well written and I wish this was my statistics text back during my school days.

There are plenty of practice problems but many of the practice problems are essentially the same problems with different wording. Much of the steps in solving the problems in each chapter involves using the same processes and formulas. The questions are also on the easy side. If you are looking for challenging statistics problems, then this book may not fill your need.

This book does not involve using calculus and only arithmetic and algebra knowledge are required. But by doing so, it doesn't dig into advanced statistics which is probably beyond the scope of this book anyhow.

Instructions on using statistics software such as SAS, MiniTab, or Excel are NOT included. This is pure statistics textbook that teaches how to solve problems using a good old fashioned calculator and statistics tables.

About the Author
Daniel Cohen received his BS degree from Penn State University in Science and his MD from Temple Medical School. He received his training in Neurology at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinic and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He remains a board-certified neurologist, but presently does not practice clinical neurology. In 1982, Dr. Cohen co-founded CNS, Inc, served as its CEO until 2001, and Chairman of the Board until it was acquired by Glaxo Smith Kline in 2006. CNS, a developer and marketer of hi-tech medical products (brainwave monitors and sleep disorders diagnostic equipment) was best known for its consumer products, the Breathe Right� nasal strip and FiberChoice™ chewable fiber supplement. In 1997 Dr. Cohen co-founded Round River Research Corp. to study the healing and psycho-spiritual effects of synchronized sounds, vibrations and electromagnetic fields. He is the inventor of technology introduced in 2013 to induce profound relaxation for stress reduction and for spiritual development. He holds numerous patents related to EEG signal processing, physiologic analysis algorithms and additional utility patents related to synchronized sound, vibration and electromagnetic fields and their effect on the body and mind. He has authored the book, Addicted To My Ego and is co-author of the books, Claim Your Basic Rights, Create a Practical Partnership with Your Soul and Claim Your Basic Rights, Embody Your Soul with Jennifer Palmquist. He continues to teach course work in personal and spiritual development.

Provocative and Transformational

This is a provocative and transformational book. It has radically changed my perception of what addiction truly is and offers a transformational path to overcome the addictions and behaviors that are keeping you from achieving the life you desire.

It starts off as an autobiographical account of a Neurologist who struggles with many of the same beliefs that I can identify with. When I read a book, I try to identify with the main character and look for similarities in how we think and behave. I found it surprising that we were so similar. This was an emotionally honest accounting of a man who struggled with many of the same issues that have caused me some of my greatest pains in life.
The biggest one, the belief that “I am not good enough” is one that I believe is a common thread for all of us, no matter what path we choose in life.

This book is quite unique. It offers both a personal story as well as a workbook section after each topic. You will learn the difference between ego and mind and soul via a very entertaining dialog between the mind and the higher self.

By utilizing the workbook you will be able to:

1. Understand what your ego is and how it runs your life
2. Understand how conditioning and beliefs sabotage your ability to live a life of joy and happiness.
3. How to transform and release these underlying beliefs and conditioning in order to make peace with your ego and transform your life.

This book addresses the conditioning and beliefs that are inherent in all of us and gives you a way to look at these, understand where they come from and provides you the opportunity to break the addiction to the behaviors and thought patterns that keep you from becoming the best you can be.
The title of the book caught my interest, as I have been involved in the addiction field for 30 years. My personal recovery has been through surrender, connection to a higher source and lots of inner work. This book deepened my ability to surrender and I personally had some profound awakenings and breakthroughs after reading the book and working with the material provided.
I highly recommend that you do at least some of the workbook sections if you want to know more about who you are. This book is a good read, but more importantly, it’s a great prescription for how to live a healthier and happier life.

Paradigm-changing, engaging and practical

This book broke new ground for me: first in its format, then with its ideas. I took the idea of the title (addicted to ego) as a humorous take on being self-centered, but the author makes a very convincing case that not only is ego addiction a ‘real’ thing (as real as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder), it is extremely prevalent and actually a root cause for other problems, illnesses and addictions. Also, like addiction, it can be effectively treated.
The author begins with his life story, which clearly presents where his ego identity was created, and where his false beliefs formed. He shares how his false beliefs effected his life in ways that made it easy to evaluate myself and my life events from a different point of view. Then, the book reframes self-identity and uses a fascinating inner dialogue between the filtered self (with all its ego addiction issues and flawed beliefs) and the unfiltered self (who we really are, without all the baggage and insecurities) to show a path to removing the addictive grasp of the ego. As a result, you can discover your more authentic self and get relief from the ego addiction cycle (I didn’t know how badly addicted to my ego I am!).
I believe the concepts in the book will be extremely helpful for me, and hope for more work from this author. And, for what it’s worth, the author’s ‘voice’ sounds nothing like the cover illustration looks! His voice is very humble, conversational and at times very funny. Highly recommended.

Life changing

I found Addicted To My Ego an intriguing and enjoyable read about one man's quest to answer the question most of us have "What am I?" with a bonus workbook section that helps find the answer for oneself. The author has a gift in meeting the reader wherever one is in one's life journey with very unique, simple and life changing exercises. This is one of those books you will read more than once and in doing so learn more and more about oneself. I'm already reading it for the second time and bought an extra copy to loan out to friends and family.
