The Dude Abides in the Command Line

What if you had a book that took you from the very beginning of the Linux command line options, and it took you through progressively interesting and relevant topics so that you really could develop a mastery of the shell? Oh, and what if it were written in a fun style that was less wonkish and easier to embrace and follow along with? Less tech, mode dude. William E. Shotts, Jr.'s "The Linux Command Line" manages to do that.

Let's face it, learning the entirely of the Linux command line can take years. It's unlikely most will walk through the book page by page and work through each example, but with this book, it feel like you could do exactly that and not get bored.

The first part of the book walks the user through the many commands that are relevant to all systems and all shells; the navigation options through directories, showing files, getting your head around terminals, finding and opening files, moving files and directories around, links (both literal and symbolic), learning about commands and how to learn more about them. All of this, as well as redirection, using pipelines, creating filters, expansions, and so on. A wonderful metaphor and explanation made in this section is that Windows is like a GameBoy, and Linux is like the world's biggest Erector Set. While Windows is nice and shiny and makes for pretty applications, it's difficult (relatively speaking) to roll your own applications without a fair bit of knowledge and packaged tools. Linux, on the other hand, right off the bat gives you all the tools you need to build just about anything in just about any conceivable way you might want to build it.

Part 2 covers configuration of the shell and the environment variables that it keeps track of. Shell variables like DISPLAY, EDITOR, LANG, PS1, TERM and many others are explained and we get to see how simple shell scripts are implemented allow us to access and modify these values. We also get introduced to a variety of test editors, but with an emphasis on vi (and a mellow focus at that). The section is rounded out by learning how to modify the command prompt that we see and make it show us more details (directories, colors, etc.).

Part 3 is a grab bag of all sorts of things that we often look at separately, but when taken together, make a lot of sense. We start with package management and making sure systems are up to date. Next we cover understanding file systems and the variety of commands that helps to mount disks, examine file systems, check and repair systems, get online and check the network for connectivity, copying files over a network and connecting via secure shell, performing archive and backup steps. The section end with a broad discussion on regular expressions, text formatting and processing and, finally, printing out files and compiling applications.

Part 4 ties it all into the true big bad voodoo of the command line, the ability to write shell scripts. The section starts out with a fairly basic script formatting and then moves on to create a program that displays system information in HTML format. Along the way, we get to see how to use the shell and all of its properties and the huge toolkit of Linux commands to structure our work, and get an introduction to "top down design". Subsequent chapters carry us through common development topics such as reading input from the command line, strings, numbers, variables and constants, and the variety of flow control ranging from simple branches to looping and case statements and arrays. The section ends with a grab bag of interesting topics including subshells, traps and error handling, asynchronous execution and named pipes.

Each section starts with the commands it will cover, walks through careful and thorough examples of each command, and then wraps with a simple explanation of the section covered, with sidebars aplenty. Seeing as this is a command line book, you bet that you are seeing a lot of the actual commands, and how they interact, how to apply permissions, manipulate text and manage processes. If you want practice with these things and not their graphical counterparts (and really, what "command line" book worth its salt wouldn't make that its prime focus), well, you get your wish!

Bottom Line:

There are a lot of books that talk about the various Linux Shells, but you'd be hard pressed to find one that does so this entertainingly. Again, it's the less tech (but not so much that the meat of the matter isn't covered well) and more "dude" (but not to the point of being embarrassing or insulting) that makes this book a joy and a treasure. If you're a novice Linux player, or just want to get beyond the pretty graphical wrapper of your MacBook, put this book at the top of your list.

Essential, practical and well written!

First of all I am a developer & system admin at a small company in MS world, but have been spending an increasing amount of time in Linux administration for side projects. I realized very quickly the limits of my abilities with bash, vi, etc. and began searching for resources. I'm only about 6 chapters into "The Linux Command Line" so far, and can say that it that anyone wanting to succeed with Linux should begin here. More advanced users could probably also benefit from the second half of the book (which I haven't gotten to yet, but addresses many common system administration tasks such as networking, archiving & backup, ftp transfers, etc.).

Like most people starting off in this topic, I relied heavily on forums and web searches, as well as a fair bit of fumbling around on my own learning how to employ the power of the command line. In hindsight I could benefitted with clarity on the topic and saved an enormous amount of time by reading a book like this, which goes from the most basic level , the function and purpose of the command line, to the more advanced such as creating shell scripts and compiling applications. The chapters which will be most valuable to me include the Introduction to Vi, Regular EXpressions, and Working With Commands.

The most compelling reason for buying this book above others I've looked at is the level of thoroughness which the author grants to each topic. While there are pages that I will probably copy, print out, and hang on my monitor for reference, more than anything the book stands as an exhaustive exposition about a topic that newbies (like myself) must learn if they plan to push their skill set beyond that of a casual user. I've also found that the author's sequenced, tutorial approach to the topic matched with his light-hearted tone made this book far more readable than many other tech books I've come across, and would recommend it to anyone.

GREAT LEARNING MATERIAL!!

I will first state that I am a partially blind Linux user. I took some Linux classes in 2006, and I completely migrated to Linux in 2007 due to several reasons which I will not cover here. When I refer to myself as "partially" blind, I say that with the intent that what minimal amount of vision I have left may not lost much longer. Throughout the majority of my 'Linux life", I heavily relied on screen magnification and graphical tools to get things done; as of recently, however, my good eye has not held up so well as it used to. With the possibility of the loss of my remaining vision eminent, I decided that I could better be served by performing many operations under Linux from the command line. I can still use a graphical environment through the use of the Orca screen reader, and there are a number fo screen readers available strictly for the command line side of Linux.

For awhile now I tried to learn the command line through Google searches and different online tutorials, as well as some arcane manpages for command line utilities. I felt kind of overwhelmed because I could not find all of the information I needed in a format for learning. Enter this book!

As mentioned by other reviewers, this book is not necessarily meant to be a reference it is written in such a way that it is like you have a personal Linux trainer. Everything is explained so that the reader can understand it, and the author seems to be very meticulous when it comes to details (by no means a complaint). I have learned more from this one book than I have from the textbooks used by the professor of the Linux class at the college which I attended back in 2006. That is not to say I learned nothing in those classes, as I learned a ton...just not enough to (for the most part) live in the command line. I feel much more confident on a command line than I ever have, and this book is primarily to thank for it.

I am an IT student seeking employment, and I was unable to afford a printed copy of this book. When I get the money, this book will be one which stands on my shelves at home. By no means am I trying to take money away from the publisher, but if you are like me and you are financially unable to purchase a printed copy of this book, this book is also published as a free and legal PDF eBook at the author's site. Just search for "LinuxCommand" "PDF" "Download". The printed version, in my opinion, would well be worth the price.

A big thanks to Mr. Shotts for writing this book. Though it may not have been written with blind users in mind (it doesn't really need to be, as most if not all of the command line is usable by a totally blind user), this book has helped me to feel much more confident in the command line. If my remaining vision does fade away, I now know that I will not have to find a way to pay for ridiculously priced commercial software in order to use an operating system which I do not really own.

If you are looking to learn the command line in order to become more productive as a general Linux user (or even as a future sysadmin), this book is a great place to start.

About the Author

A. Daniel Frankforter is Professor of History at the Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught for four decades. His undergraduate work was in the history of ideas and philosophy at Franklin and Marshall College. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Drew University, did graduate work at Columbia University and the University of G�ttingen, and completed master’s and doctoral degrees in medieval history and religious studies at Penn State. His research interests are in English ecclesiastical history, the evolving status of women in medieval Europe, and textual criticism. Articles on these topics have appeared in such journals as Manuscripta, Church History, The British Studies Monitor, The Catholic Historical Review, The American Benedictine Review, The International Journal of Women’s Studies, and The Journal of Women’s History. His books include A History of the Christian Movement: An Essay on the Development of Christian Institutions, Civilization and Survival, The Shakespeare Name Dictionary (with J. Madison Davis), The Medieval Millennium: An Introduction, The Western Heritage, brief edition (with Donald Kagan, Stephen Ozment, and Frank Turner), The Heritage of World Civilizations, brief third edition (with Albert Craig, William Graham, Donald Kagan, Stephen Ozment, and Frank Turner), an edition and translation of Poullain de la Barre’s De L’�galit� des deux Sexes, and Stones for Bread: A Critique of Contemporary Worship. His most recent work is: Word of God/Words of Men: The Use and Abuse of Scripture. Over the course of his career he has developed 15 courses dealing with aspects of the ancient and medieval periods of Western civilization, the Judeo-Christian tradition, and gender issues. His service in the classroom has been acknowledged by the Penn State Behrend Excellence in Teaching Award and the prestigious Amoco Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching Performance.

William M. Spellman is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina Asheville and Director of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, a constorium of twenty-six institutions in the United States and Canada.� He is a graduate of Suffolk University, Boston, and holds a PhD from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.� He is the author of John Locke and The Problem of Depravity (Oxford, 1988); The Latitudinarians and the Church of England (Georgia, 1993); John Locke (Macmillan, 1995): European Political Thought, 1600-1700 (Macmillan, 1997); Monarchies, 1000-2000 (Reaktion, 2000); The Global Community: Migration and the Making of the Modern World (Sutton, 2002): A Concise History of the World Since 1945 (Palgrave, 2006); Uncertain Identity: International Migration Since 1945 (Reaktion, 2008); and A Short History of Western Political Thought (Palgrave, 2011).

An addictive series

There are now three different sects of vampires. With two Druid male vampires who have the superior strength and can walk in daylight, but not without the effects of an allergy to the sun. There are now three Druid females that have been discovered. One has been prophesied as the Queen who will renew the vampire race but Holly is only 19 and a week ago she was a virginal college student. Holly has had to undergo the mating ritual decreed by the Vampire Bible. Her sister, Rachel is 28. Holly is with Zachary, the rogue vampire. Rachel is with Cole, the Reaper. But now the faction vampires are determined to capture the Queen and breed her. Beau, a newly discovered Druid Male vampire met Aubree, the newly found Druid female when he rescued from being raped. They are now a bonded pair and Aubree is pregnant. Beau has just rescued her from the faction before she could be breed by them.
The action remains fast paced. The characters are well developed. The book is a fast read and disappointing when the end is reached so soon.

I LOVED this series

This is a review of the Druid Series Books 1-9, as if this was one book. The same review will be posted for all books in this series on my Goodreads profile. Spoiler free review! Star levels may change with the different books as some were more compelling than others. But all dependent on each other.
I LOVED this series. This is a pretty epic weaving of druids, vampires, Mers, etc. It is imperative, in my opinion, to read these back to back to back. Do. Not. Stop. Marata Eros has an incredible ability to paint a richly visual environment and give the reader tangible characters that you can attach to - for better or worse! To me, no matter the content or genre, if I can “see” what I’m reading, the author has gone above and beyond in creating a work of art. I became invested in the entire story, the complete lives and history that were being played out before me. This story is saturated with intense action, hot sex, mythical creatures, and a captivating history of another kind of existence. Even reading them in order, the timeline and characters can get a little confusing at times, but don’t give up, it’s worth it!
After reading the entire thing, it all comes into perspective. I loved trying to work it out along the way. I truly enjoyed the back and forth of characters, timeline, events, etc. I admit I wrote the author at one point to make sure I was reading things in the right order and wasn’t missing anything, but other than that, I really, really liked having to focus as much as I did to keep it all straight.
This is a pretty epic time line of events, characters and their history. It is important to read them in order. Things do seem to double back from time to time, and it is completely worth re-reading as you go along to make sure you have it straight! Not many series are worth that, again, in my opinion. This one was.

Can't wait for more of Aubree and Beau! They are my favorites! Rachael and Holly both deserve the to stupid to live award. Even after Zach told them flat out the danger they are in they do something so stupid. Things are looking grim, especially for Zach. The new players Con and the Faction and the Druid Kier. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Black Death is an action packed thriller.

It was refreshing to read a mystery/action book without being exposed to profanity, illicit sex and gratuitous violence. It had a good, well developed plot and kept the interest of the reader throughout.

Amazing, and a Must for Every Medical Student!

Worthy of 6 stars. This book shines in its amazing and impressive presentation of the human body. I strongly suggest to every medical student not to learn how to locate structures nor what they look like using cartoon drawings and artistic representations. Rohen's shines because you don't only see the real structures, you see their texture, colouring, and spatial relationships. The same part of the body is also commonly displayed from different views/slices, and every structure is dissected with exquisite dexterity, revealing structures through various layers.

This edition of the series also has labeling of the structures with arrows and lines, with the name of the corresponding structure away from the structures themselves, so it's like the book works as flash cards too!

This book specifically shines in:
-GI system
-Head & neck (you'll be thankful you got the book for just reason, haha)
-Male/female pelvis
-Being light on text. Use this book for the visual component of your studies, and supplement it with Netter's and Moore's.

This book is great for the entire human body though, because you get to see every single tendon and ligament as well too. Everything you can imagine and need is in here!

This is the most impressive and useful textbook I've had in medical school so far, and highly recommend it to any MS-1 starting out!

My book has since degraded in shape since it's older and I've carried it around so much, but I'm definitely getting another copy to keep with me for the rest of my medical career. It's a must-have!

Great book - love the dissection detail

There is a newer edition available, but this one was perfect for my needs. The many color photos of dissected tissue from different angles, supplemented by drawings, is a really super guidebook for working on the human form. I'm in the dissection lab this week and the book is a very helpful reference. The index is taking a little time to figure out; not the clearest organization for my preference.

If you have involvement in gear design or simply want to understand the details of gear geometry this is a must for both reference and training. I was lucky enough to buy a highly discounted used copy and treasure this book, wrote my name all over it because design engineers are thieves and cheapskates not willing to buy their own copies.

When I saw that the publication date was 2013 I thought the book might have references to modern CAD tools and spreadsheets. However after receiving the book the actual publication date is 1992. The book has been reprinted several times since 1992 but the material has not been updated.

All the information, formulas, and calculation are still valid but the presentation leaves much to be desired.

Great overall business interviewing tool

I tore through this one. After reading the other reviews for this book, I thought it would help me in getting through interviews. The cases provided really get the thoughts flowing for how one can navigate their own interview. I know the book is targeted at consultants but it's really a great walk through of just about any management interview. More employers want to test their prospective employees before giving them a piece of the pie. This book will give you the thought process to punch through and get the job.

In preparation for my interviews I initially only bought Case In Point. I eventually decided to buy some more books on case interviews given the competitiveness in landing a management consulting position,

This book turned out to be my favorite; it is well-written, and provides insights (tips & tricks) that I did not find back in any other book on case interviews. Furthermore, the author (who is a Bain consultant) argues you can crack most business cases along four easy-to-use dynamic business case frameworks. Reflecting on it, I ended up successfully using his frameworks for quite some case interviews.
