About the Author

Karen Wiese is a botanist with interests in plant ecology, restoration, soil science and plant- pollinator interactions. Karen has a Master of Science degree from the University of California at Davis in Plant Protection and Pest Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources from Michigan State University. Karen has been guiding natural history hikes throughout the West for over two decades. Karen is active in the California Native Plant Society, the Northern California Botanists and an avid hiker, backpacker and birder. Karen and her husband Carl own an organic farm in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, where when they aren’t botanizing, garden year round with their snowshoe Siamese cat.

Good guide for the area for which it's intended

Nicely organized by color. You should be able to find common local flowers fairly easily with this system. I bought as a gift, so haven't used it, but own several field guides, and this one seems good. Attractive format and good photos which show detail you need for id (not always so with wildflower book photos). Remember to relax with the flower you wish to identify, take the time to notice details and read the description carefully. You'll love it when you meet a new friend. Also it's very helpful to learn some of the common plant families. You'll be more than half way to an identification when you can guess what group it belongs to.

Excellent resource book.

As a voice teacher it's extremely important to help students understand the physiology and anatomy of the voice. This book covers everything: alignment, breathing, phonation, resonation, articulation and more, in a way that is understandable and useful. I'm a bookie so I have gathered quite a library of voice, repertoire and vocal reference books. This has become one of my first 'go-to' books when I'm explaining vocal anatomy to students or if I want to refresh my memory. I haven't listened to the accompanying CD so I can't opine on its effectiveness. This book is a bit pricey. Nevertheless, the content is useful and I found it worth the cost.

It's a good tool to teach

It is a very good tool to teach your students. I already knew much of the information, but the multimedia explanation is a very easy way to explain young students how the voice works.

Excellent book (so far) and excellent pedagogue

I began reading Dr. McCoy's book back in January and am still in the process of doing so. I was lucky enough to attend a voice pedagogy seminar where he was the featured singer just this past weekend. It was amazing to get a different view of singing, the voice, and the mechanisms that are inside the human body. I was also fortunate enough to be a "wired" student and experience using the software Dr. McCoy utilizes in this book, Voce Vista. For me, as a visual learner, it was excellent to see what is happening acoustically and physically in my body and outside of it when I sing. Overall I believe Dr. McCoy to be a man and educator who truly knows his stuff and I hope some day to be able to study with him privately. The extent of knowledge he has is truly remarkable.
