I purchased this book because it was required for my phlebomoty class but I actually liked it. I expected the usually confusing textbook written in "textbook" language but it was anything but that. It easy to understand, helpful illustrations and a lot of practice quizzes that were very useful.

About the Author
Saul Williams is an acclaimed poet, musician, and actor. The film Slam, which he cowrote and starred in, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival (1998), and the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has contributed to The New York Times, voiced Jean-Michel Basquiat in�Downtown 81, and cut records with Rick Rubin and Trent Reznor. it feels like you are really looking into someone's stream of consciousness

I'm not usually one for poetry, especially written poetry. I'm of the mind that poetry is meant to be heard. But Williams might have changed my mind about this; at least to some extent. Part poetry, part script, part visual art, this book has a little bit of everything. It uses the page to express themes in the poems. One poem about division is literally split down the middle. When the words are scattered across the page, it feels like you are really looking into someone's stream of consciousness. Williams makes the poems interactive in a way I don't usually see and it was so refreshing.

As a person who comes from the visual arts, I found his play on visuals with the way he "drew" his poems, challenged the typical layout of stanzas and how things are written to convey a visual confusion, appropriately reflecting the overwhelming visual chaos of our times. Saul Williams is a brilliant artist and poet because he culls his references from all that is around us. I have been on the hunt for a longtime for a master poet, one who can mirror our times and Saul Williams is truly it. His rhyme and melody are jazz/rap/and religious hymns all at once. His choice of words and reason are profound. They are all reflective of his soulful journey, open mind and (in)sight.This book of poetry is one of the best I have read so far. I cannot recommend a book more.

Dry, Dull and Obvious

To be honest I can see why this book was difficult to find, it was next to worthless. I had to buy if for a university course, and despite being required to read several chapters I doubt I learnt a single piece of interesting or valuable information from the book. The funny thing is, the course I was required to read this for was actually quite interesting and informative, it was simply a quick choice by the lecturer due to complaints about not having a course textbook. The entire text is a simple rehashing of basic project management techniques, any of which you could find on a number of websites for free with a quick Google search. The writing style was amateurish and hard to read due to poor flow and lack of context. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, a waste of money plain and simple.

If You Liked The Fifth Discipline, You'll Love This Book

I had read The Fifth Discipline, and liked the book very much. I knew about the Fieldbook, but found its bulk to be intimidating. Then, Goren Carstedt gave me a copy, and asked me to read it. Although the book invites the reader to skip around, I am a front to back reader. I decided to read it while walking on the treadmill daily. My exercise regimen started to improve because I enjoyed reading this book in 45 minute segments so much. You should probably do the same. Also, if you can skip around, that is better. What I found is that there is a helpful exercise or two for implementing every key idea in The Fifth Discipline. This added much more meaning to that book for me, and also helped me identify and solve some problems that I had been thinking about. I strongly urge you to get this book, read it, and read it again. Be sure to do the exercises that intrigue you, because they will help you to a much better understanding of your business. If you just want help with systems thinking, there is a section of about a 100 pages that you could read in a few hours that would help you very much.

Understand the systems around you, and create lasting change

Nothing happens in isolation, every event or situation is the result of numerous related events. In order to create lasting change in a work environment, in your personal life, or in your physical health, there are numerous interrelated factors that contribute to the current situation.
Within this book you will discover how your actions create your current reality, and why certain actions may or may not bring about the desired change. The book identifies "systems archetypes" such as the snowball effect, balancing loops, growth and under investment, fixes that fail, limits to growth, shifting the burden and others. These are general models that describe many familiar scenarios and situations.
Along the way, the book details:
Personal mastery - a commitment to personal growth and learning
Mental Models - The beliefs that people hold about the world, change, and reality that may be impeding the change process or limiting growth.
Shared Vision - Overcoming mental models and bringing concerns and beliefs out in to the open, so members of an organization may work toward a common goal.
Team learning - Building on shared vision, by aligning goals, dreams and desires, in a manner such that a group of people function as a whole to achieve a common goal.
There are numerous easy to understand examples of the five disciplines at work in the book, that anyone can relate to and understand. They range from corporate examples such as the ultimate failure of Peoples Express airlines, a simple supply chain management scenario in the "Beer Game" and numerous examples from everyday life.
It's an easy reading book, very thought provoking, and enlightening, definitely worth picking up a copy. The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook, and the Dance of Change provide excellent complimentary reading to the 5th Discipline, and are full of exercises relating to the Fifth Discipline. In addition, Eli Goldratt has written several books that compliment this work very well particularly the Goal.

Even More Relevant and More Valuable Now

This is the first of three Senge books I greatly admire, the others being The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook and The Dance of Change. It is important to keep in mind that "total learning" is a misnomer. We can never learn everything it is possible to learn (are you fluent in Mandarin Chinese?) nor can we ever learn all of the possible applications of what we do know. Senge's objective is to help all organizations (regardless of nature or size) to optimize opportunities for appropriate learning, and, to assist everyone involved to optimize the results of their efforts to learn. What several other reviewers have either ignored or minimized is Senge's substantial contribution to our understanding of effective, sustainable change within any organizational structure. (You are also urged to check out O'Toole's Leading Change, another excellent source of information and counsel.) Senge organizes The Fifth Discipline as follows:
Part I How our Actions Create Our Reality...and How We Can Change It
Part II The Fifth Discipline: The Cornerstone of the Learning Organization
Part III The Core Disciplines: Building the Learning Organization
Part IV Prototypes
Part V Coda
According to Senge, there are five new "component technologies" which are gradually converging to innovate learning organizations: Systems Thinking ("invisible fabrics of interrelated actions"), Personal Mastery (of various skills at the highest possible level), Mental Models ("deeply engrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures or images" which influence learning), Building Shared Vision (of "a set of principles and guiding practices" which help to define "pictures of the future"), and finally Team Learning (based on dialogue which enables effective collaboration). The book examines each of these five separate but interdependent "disciplines" with meticulous care and compelling eloquence.
Organizations as well as those who comprise them can (and often do) have learning disabilities. For example, what I call the Negative Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: "I can't do "it" or "We can't do "it." The prophecy is then fulfilled (of course) as if it had been expressed by the Oracle at Delphi. Senge is well-aware of learning disabilities. Within the framework of his narrative, he suggests a number of practical strategies and tactics to overcome them. In effect, Senge has created a highly-readable, immensely practical, and extraordinarily comprehensive examination of "The Art & Practice of the Learning Organization."
Although first published ten years ago, The Fifth Discipline is more relevant and more valuable today than ever before. Why? Because change is the only constant and it can occur in seconds rather than in years or even days. Because there is now so much more information to absorb, digest, and evaluate. Because organizations are (finally) beginning to recognize their under-utilization of their "human capital" and need immediate assistance. I give The Fifth Discipline the highest possible rating and conclude my review of it by quoting Derek Bok's response when parents of Harvard students complained about a tuition increase: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
Those who share my high regard for this book are encouraged to read William Isaacs' Dialogue, also. Senge provides an excellent Introduction to it.

Nick Lomb was Curator of Astronomy at the Sydney Observatory for over thirty years (1979-2010). He continues to work as a consultant astronomer for the Sydney Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Observatory. He is the author of the Australian Sky Guide, published annually by the Powerhouse Museum, as well several books on astronomy including Astronomy for the Southern Sky (1986) and the catalogue produced for the Powerhouse Museum’s exhibition on the 2004 transit of Venus, Transitof Venus: The Scientific Event that Led Captain Cook to Australia (2004).

A Great Reference Tool

This book can easily be called "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Transits of Venus." The author, Nick Lomb, did a fantastic job of documenting Venus transits throughout history and he provides a plethora of facts, photos, artistic renderings, and tidbits that keep you turning the pages and wanting to read more. It is obvious to me that he loves the subjects he writes about. You should also know that on June 5/6 of this year there will be another Venus Transit. This one is extremely important because it will be the last Venus transit to occur during our lifetime! If you miss this one, you will not have another chance. The next Venus transit across the face of the sun occurs in 2117, over 100 years from now! Buy this book for reference and be ready to truly enjoy a once in a lifetime celestial event.

This book was written as a preparation for the last transit of Venus to be visible from Earth during the twenty first century and it took place on 6th June, 2012 (the reviewer's birthday). Australia was one place on earth where the full transit was visible, which may account for the great public interest that was aroused here. One does not have to be an astronomer to have found this a historically significant and fascinating event. This book tells the story of people from many nations who have tried to observe the transit of Venus, some successfully and some unsuccessfully. The format of the book is almost square with sides of about 23 centimetres. The illustration is prolific with both black and white and colour photographs and sketches. The large size format allows plenty of room for this purpose and many of the photographs used are important historically. The book has 227 pages that include an index, a glossary and a bibliography. The front cover shows a dramatic picture of the transit of Venus with the relative size of Venus being greatly exaggerated compared to the sun. There are two sets of text; firstly there is a continuous story in a larger font and this is interrupted by the many photos and the text explaining these photos in a smaller font. The net result is to lose continuity, though it is a difficult problem to solve.

The first transit of Venus was observed by Jeremiah Horrocks in England on 6th December 1639 and he wrote an account of his observations. He had advised his friend, William Crabtree of the event and they were the first men to observe a transit of Venus as far as is known. Each successive transit was observed until the present day and Lomb describes the attempts to observe it. He produces a very interesting story of human, patience, endurance and courage. Even though few human beings alive today are likely to see the next transit in 2117, the book is well worth reading from cover as it is full of fascinating information. The book is thoroughly recommended.

A fascinating story

This book tells a fascinating tale of Venus transiting, or moving across the face of, the sun, from 1631 when this event was first predicted to the then-imminent June 2012 transit. The transits became predictable in 17th Century, when scientists began to understand orbital mechanics. Observance of the transit was determined to be be a method for determining the true distance of Earth from the sun but transits only occur in pairs at about 120-year intervals. The effort to capture data during the 18th and 19th Century events make for fascinating reading, involving hardship, adventure and ingenuity. This book has LOTS of excellent photos of the instruments used and the people involved as well as some good maps. Well worth getting!

A remarkable book!

This was an amazing book that really brings forth great animals through very intricate dots. I have never created such intricate designs in dot-to-dot in the past but I am so glad that I was able to find this and try this with my own daughters. You will love the pictures that you create as you go page-to-page in this remarkable book!

Very cool dot to dot book

Very cool dot to dot book. It is large (note the 10.8" X 14.8" size). I hadn't noticed it when I ordered. Instead of differentiating different lines with sequential numbers, lower case letters and upper case letters, there are multiple sequences of numbers differentiated with colors.

Really challenging, super intricate, not your everyday dot-to-dot. These definitely aren't the puzzles you remember from grade school...they are 100 times better!!! The first one absolutely rocks!! Get out some sharp pencils, make sure you have enough time, and connect the dots. It's so theraputic!
