Upton Sinclair (1878-1968), novelist and journalist, is best known for his novel about the Chicago meatpacking industry, ""The Jungle"." A paperback edition of his ""I, Candidate for Governor"" is available from California. Jules Tygiel is the author of ""The Great Los Angeles Swindle: Oil, Stocks, and Scandal during the Roaring Twenties"" (paperback California, 1996) and ""The Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy"." He is Professor of History at San Francisco State University.

A Tireless Crusader for "Social Justice"

After reading The Jungle I was curious to read Upton Sinclair's account of his life, and this didn't disappoint. It's quite likely he made a big impact in various ways at various times in his life. Some of it's a bit gloomy, for instance he states that when a socialist colleague of his together with a newspaper reporter visited and worked in the Chicago stockyards a year after The Jungle was published they discovered that conditions were exactly as bad as ever, but that the meat was now "guaranteed pure by the new government inspection service." The follow-up report was not published by that newspaper and Mr Sinclair notes that American newspapers have always sided with the privileged and powerful. He also mentions how in the course of his research he learned about horrific conditions in other industries like the mining, steel and railroad industries, in which children were employed and sometimes died, and of how he was thrown into jail for crimes such as reading a few lines of the US Constitution to some striking workers and for conducting a peaceful protest outside the Rockefeller building after some family members of striking miners had been killed in an arson attack. It certainly seems apparent from this book that people had less rights in the early 20th century than they do now and no doubt Upton Sinclair played his part in extending people's rights not just in the US, but in all countries where his books were published.

MARY E. PAPKE is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her areas of specialization include late nineteenth and early twentieth century literature by American women and feminist theory. About the Author
Klaus Krippendorff (PhD in Communication, University of Illinois, Urbana, 1967) is Professor of Communication and Gregory Bateson Term Professor for Cybernetics, Language, and Culture at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. Besides numerous publications in journals of communication, sociological methodology, cybernetics, and system theory, he authored "Information Theory, Structural Models for Qualitative Data", a "Dictionary of Cybernetics", edited "Communication and Control in Society", and coedited "The Analysis of Communication Content and Developments and Scientific Theories and Computer Techniques".

Besides supporting various initiatives to develop content analysis techniques and continuing work on reliability measurement, Klaus Krippendorff's current interest is fourfold: With epistemology in mind, he inquires into how language brings forth reality. As a critical scholar, he explores the conditions of entrapment and liberation. As a second-order cybernetician, he plays with recursive constructions of self and others in conversations; and as designer, he attempts to move the meaning and human use of technological artifacts into the center of design considerations, causing a redesign of design - all of them exciting projects.

A great resource for designer and design researchers

I was using Krippendorffs Semantic Turn over the past two years in my curriculum to teach design theory in different context, at Universities in Europe and North America and the response of the students was always great.
I appreciate Kripendorff's deep insight into contemporary developments and the discourse formation in design and the models he proposes to use.
His trajectory of artificiality, he has developed in his book is a great metaphor to frame and conceptualize some important developments in the design professions. I could imagine, because also some students told me, that this book is in some parts complex to understand, but it is also one of the exceptional readings on a theoretical which reframes the design professions for the future. I think it is a must for designers and the once who teaches design, even if we don't agree with all the statements made. It is also a great starting point to get involved in a theoretical design discourse.

The only wedding planning book you need

This book is fantastic -- very practical and comprehensive. I got every popular wedding book out there from the library (including this one) and none of the others came close. I ended up buying it since it has such detailed advice on everything from invitation etiquette to the names of different train lengths to how to approach tipping (and a multitude in-between). Planning a wedding has a whole new lexicon of its own and this book has helped me navigate every element of it.

Such a important and easy to understand book

My husband has had 4stage liver cancer and we have been using cannabis oil as one of the alternative treatments with great success. He got diagnosed over 3 years ago and he is doing well, living a quality life. We got contacted from many people all over the world and now we have a great book to recommend which is both easy to understand, easy to share with family and friends who can't understand what cannabis get do as medicine, but at the same time accurate and even with suggestion for how to use the medicine. I highly recommend this book for anyone in medical crisis and also for anyone who wants to stay healthy.

Excellent book !

Even though I had heard of the discovery of the endocannabinoid system and CB1 and CB2 receptors prior to reading this book, I learned so much more about using cannabis to treat medical conditions from this book. Many details about dosing, relating to different medical conditions are covered in depth. It is encouraging to read so much concise information about cannabis use as a medicine. Knowing the history of cannabis prohibition, it’s easy to understand why we can’t get this information from doctors. It’s a shame, considering the safety profile of cannabis, that more states don’t have medical cannabis laws enacted. So many details about the human endocannabinoid system are explained and easy to understand. The author also suggests other ideas to help bring this information to your regular doctor, in an effort to educate the doctor & enhance the doctor patient experience. I feel more empowered to choose a new primary care doctor from the information presented in this book. Cannabis is a nutrient not acknowledged by most medical professionals, and helps our bodies heal when used properly. I like the authors presentation of the material, it was easy to read, not full of medical jargon where I have to look up a word every three pages.
