We discussed this book in my book club. Everyone liked it. I read it in Italian because I continue to study Italian. (My present textbook is a biography of Lorenzo Da Ponte, which I look forward to very much.) The book is more oblique than the film of the same name. There are some ambiguities in the novel that are made explicit in the film. It is a difficult era and a difficult topic for an American to fully appreciate and perceive its subtleties and nuances.

I love how Nancy Kress writes. I'm often compelled to write down a phrase here and there that I like so I can refer to it later. She always writes about compelling topics woven within her very human stories - never moralistic or pedantic; always questioning. And I like how she might leave a story feeling - at first - like there's more to write, but the question has been answered, so there's no need to write more. Intriguing.

Hard to find, but worth the effort

Another gem from the late Ken Grimwood. Across 300 years, a woman who cannot age or die deals with an endless sequence of love and loss. The writing is beautiful, the history is fascinating, and the main character is strong, sympathetic and memorable. Despite being more than 30 years old, this novel comfortably stands the test time. A hard title to find a copy of, but worth the effort.

More than just romance

I read Elise after reading an obituary on author Ken Grimwood, in which the plot outlines of a few of his books were mentioned. I opted to read Replay, Breakthrough, and Elise. Replay was just fantastic, a terrific read. Breakthrough was a tough read, as I found most of it boring, and this was the true romance book of the three. I enjoyed Elise as much as I did Replay. The book was liking watching a movie, and Grimwood's plot was plausible, even his explanation of why the protagonist was immortal. Since the book was about a woman, it did have some romance, but the major point of the book I think, was the mixed feelings that come with being immortal. This book makes you think about life and death, and was superbly written. Grimwood was a true master wordsmith, and it's a pity that he died so soon, and ironic considering the subject matter of his books. My main question after reading these great novels is why haven't they been made into movies? The plots are far more interesting and intriguing than most of the junk seen in theatres today.
