Fits a rare niche in how to books

Spike Carlsen's new book, Ridiculously Simple Furniture Projects is deceptive. Upon first glance, I thought it was a beginner's book (the cover has the same "feel" as Aime Fraser's book Getting Started in Woodworking). They are aimed at different audiences though. Spike's book also has a great list of projects using standard hardware store and home supply places, but then it diverges. "Simple" is not really so. While he make the projects look easy, the assumption is you have a working knowledge of woodworking basics. Helping this book is Spike's ability to actually write well (but since you've all read is Splintered History of Wood you knew that already! Haven't read it yet? Shame!! Go read that also. It's on Rosenblatt's required book list. You can't read finish this review until you have. I have time. I'll wait).

Usually, when you open a book like this, chapter one is a list of the tools you need, or want, or some idea of what you should get. If that's what you need, go and get Aime's book, then come back to this one. Within the four chapters of the book are projects and, even more important: Techniques. It's not a how to if you don't know how. It's a: Here is a better and easier way to do what you've probably tried in the past. And it's terrific for that.

I love this book on so many levels, I can't really describe how. It has some great things to build, and best of all, they are practical. There are few homes that won't need at least a couple of the things he's laid out for you. Look through the book, read his brief but clear set of instructions, look at the plans, study the photos, learn from his techniques, and the next thing you know, you've got in your home (or given as gifts) some really great stuff.

I can't lie to you, it's not a book for the advanced woodworker. But for those of you who now have a few power tools (a circular saw, router and drill will do you fine for much of the work here), you no longer have the excuse that you can't do more than a couple of bookshelves. Just delve into Spike's work here, and out will come great stuff. Great for your home, and even greater for your growing woodworking skills.

This book is exactgly what we wanted

I bought this book for my husband who is recently retired and reviving his interest in woodworking. He has been updating his tools and outfitting his workshop with the basics. This book was perfect for him. He has some basic skills and wants to learn more--this book includes projects that are simple, but well designed and very attractive. The instructions and photos are well done, and the extra comments and side articles are very helpful. Of all the books we looked we own on the topic, this is probably the best.

We made the footstools a family project.

I am writing to thank you for your wonderful book and to tell you about how you have helped our family. My wife and I became very interested in the article by Spike Carlson on the Limbert Footstool We decided that a replica Limbert footstool would be the perfect "heirloom" for our children and grandchildren. I downloaded the full-size plans from your website and made templates out of 1/8" plywood. I am 60 years old and I already have the woodworking tools necessary for just such project. Taking stock of my lumber supply we determined we could make 15 stools, one for each of my siblings, my wife, each of our children, and one special granddaughter, Lilly! I did not have enough 12" boards so I started by gluing some smaller ones up where necessary. We had enough for four stools made of black walnut, five white oak, and two each of hickory, red oak and white ash.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, my sons, son-in-laws and grandsons all came to my garage where we had our "King Family Footstool Factory" set up. Some drew patterns; some cut pieces on the table saw and others cut the curved aprons on the band saw. One son-in-law drilled the holes in the legs and the tops while the other sanded the holes smooth on the spindle sander. My oldest son used the scroll saw on the leg cutouts and the grandsons did much of the sanding. We had a great time in this family project. By the end of the day we had all of the parts (and a couple of "spares" and "rejects") cut out and ready for assembly. Over the next couple of weeks we routed some of the edges and then assembled, sanded and finished the footstools. We stained a few of them and then put 3 coats of lacquer on them all. They are beautiful, sturdy - and the best Christmas gift we ever gave because they are crafted with the love and camaraderie of our family. Thank you, Spike, for the great idea - our family will always remember the Christmas of 2011. This is another interesting work by Douglas Baker. In it are a couple of concepts that i hadn't encountered before, and that hence enriched my knowledge on the subject. Said this, I found this book missing bits and pieces, and stylistically poorly executed.
Baker here continually refers to other works by him (in particular 'the Jewel in the Lotus'), forcing the reader to move on to that work and to make too many mental notes. This makes me assume that it would have perhaps been a more appropriate task to integrate the two books, for a clearer understanding of the topics presented. Ultimately i found section IV fruitless, where instead i would have loved to learn more techniques. Said techniques are definitely available from other sources: even just recalling basic exercises found in the occult tradition and taught by writers such as the learned Jean Dubuis, would prove invaluable to readers interested in a more in depth approach to meditation. On this line, i found Baker's 'Esoteric Anatomy' books to be more insightful than this reviewed work.

Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk in the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa, defected with his pregnant wife, Anna, and their young son in September 1945. Gouzenko also had a cache of stolen documents proving Soviet espionage against World War II allies: Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. On the basis of those documents and Gouzenko's testimony, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was able to roll up a spy ring that included a member of the Canadian Parliament. In the U.S., the case "marked the beginning of a red scare." After the furor died down, Gouzenko wrote his memoirs, which inspired the movie The Iron Curtain, and a bestselling novel, The Fall of a Titan, which sparked comparisons to Tolstoy, before dying of a heart attack in 1982. Gouzenko's story is a real-life spy thriller, and Knight recounts his defection and its frenzied aftermath deftly. She overreaches, however, when she argues that the affair "destroyed" the "already fragile post-war peace" and led "inexorably into the Cold War." Perhaps the most intriguing revelations relate to the case of Igor Gouzenko, a Soviet cipher clerk in the embassy in Ottawa, Canada. Revisionism

I looked this book over at Borders and decided not to buy it when I saw that the author claims that the jury is still out on whether Alger Hiss was a Soviet spy. Frankly, it's my opinion that the Venona decrypts of KGB messages during the World War II era have pretty much settled this issue. Hiss was a spy and so were a number of other people that Ms. Knight seems to assert "reasonable doubt on."

Also, the assertion by her that the Gouzenko case marred amicable relations with the Soviet Union after World War II is ludicrous. To use Marxist terminology, that alliance collapsed of its own contradictions (democracies allied with expansionist totalitarian regime). Also, setting aside the Hiss and Harry Dexter White Cases, Venona indisputably proves that the Soviets were running an extremely aggressive intelligence collection program in the West of a scope and nature that is not normally associated with friendly intent.

So I would give this a pass, but if you have to read it, you should also check out a book called "the FBI-KGB War" by Robert Lamphere. Lamphere was an FBI agent deeply involved in many of the cases that this book discusses and in my opinion, he has a lot clearer view of reality than Ms. Knight.

Half the story, but a well-written half

The book is a gripping account of espionage investigation and the political fallout from Igor Gouzenko's defection to Canada in September 1945. Knight argues that the Gouzenko case triggered a change of public perception of the Soviet Union, from that of a wartime ally to that of a deceitful enemy. This change of perception, and the political outrage in the West over Soviet espionage, precipitated anti-communist hysteria in the US and became the opening act of the drama of the Cold War.

Knight's analysis is certainly interesting, placing her clearly in the ranks of revisionist historians (those inclined to blame the US for the Cold War). Her research is very impressive; recently declassified Canadian materials are consulted at great length. On the other hand, the Russian side of the story is inadequately covered. Knight resorts here to a few articles or interviews by former Soviet intelligence officers, omitting archival evidence altogether.

Granted, as she quickly points out in the beginning, archival access in Russia remains problematic, and Gouzenko files at the GRU archive are certainly out of reach. But other archives (e.g. the Foreign Ministry, RGASPI) are more or less open to researchers, and Knight's omissions are regrettable.

As matters stand, only half Gouzenko's story is told in the book; the other - the Russian half - still remains to be written. Still, Gouzenko's life and times are examined in great detail. Knight shows something of an ambivalent feeling towards Gouzenko's personality, admiring him for courage but censuring him for egoism and arrogance.

The one important problem that is barely mentioned in the book is Stalin's policy in the early years of the Cold War. Only once does Knight offer her opinion about the underlying motivations of Soviet foreign policy - i.e. that Stalin wanted to cooperate with the West *before* Hiroshima - but this important observation is not buttressed by any evidence, except for a reference to the Zubok/Pleshakov book (Inside the Kremlin's Cold War).

And yet, Stalin's side of the story is exceptionally important, for if he ruled out cooperation with the West in the aftermath of Hiroshima, then did it really matter what Gouzenko did, or what Washington witch-hunters thought - the Cold War had already begun! The book's title is "How the Cold War began", but certainly without a greater examination of the Soviet side of the Cold War, we can never really tell how it all began. Nevertheless, it is an interesting book, well worth reading, well-written, full of insights and pertinent information.

Also, towards the end the author defends Alger Hiss (arguing that he was not a Soviet spy), though she does not really offer much evidence to undermine the well-known public prejudice to the contrary.

a really brilliant work

i bought this out of interest, after seeing it had been nominated for a literary prize here in canada. i'm glad i did. it's such an important part of history - and this is the first book that examines with riveting detail - the story about gouzenko, a soviet clerk who defected. the documents, letters and accounts are really interesting, and the author makes it a really brilliant read.

When it comes to strategy guides, no company does them better than Piggyback Interactive. Based in the UK, Piggyback rarely sends strategy guides to the states. When you get one, though, you're glad. These are detailed like no other guide you've ever seen. Their Final Fantasy XII guide is just as detailed.

At over 300 pages, this is Piggyback's biggest guide they've ever done. This tome is packed with more information than any other Final Fantasy XII guide you can find.

It takes a long time to jump into the walkthrough in this guide. It begins with the game basics that take up a ton of space. Mostly because it doesn't just get you adapted to the controls, but Final Fantasy XII's combat system. Giving you the run down on everything, including Gambits. Not only do they explain Gambits but they offer some pretty good examples of how to set them up. Using this guide you'll be able to set up a well balanced party. It helps to see just how good the gamebit system can really be. It'll also give you the low down on every character. Showing how much they'll level up and what some of their stats will be between certain levels. Just the same, this is the only guide that goes in depth on all the guests that'll join your party and let's you know what their gambits are.

Afterwards we get into the staddard items list for weapons, armor etc. Again, incredibly detailed but also helping you make sense of what everything means and how it is you'll be able to hit an enemy a series of times. After that, there's the bestiary. Separated by area, it's a helpful tool. Also showing you who your friend is. But beyond that, the game shows every Rare Game monster you can think of.

After all this we finally get to the walkthrough. It's spoiler free and details an optimal route through each section, while having lettered callouts on the map. Don't think this means for a second this walkthrough won't help. It definitely will. It's far better than the BradyGAMES guide, but there are some things they might mention that you might need a screenshot so that you can figure out just what they're talking about.

With all the information packed into this guide you'd think page flipping would be a problem. It isn't. At the very back, there's an index that pinpoints you to everything the guide has. The guide is also spoiler free for anyone who is curious.

The first eBook that I ever read was John Simpson’s Condor One. This would hook me into the mm romance genre. I have followed the series over the last several years and have enjoyed it very much. Now, the series comes to an end as Mr. Simpson has published Condor and the Shifting Sands.

David Windsor, the former President of the United States and current US Ambassador to the Court of St. James (in other words, US Ambassador to the United Kingdom), where his cousin King William sits on the throne. He receives a call from the Duke of Somerset, also know as Darren Wilson the son of the current US President. He tells his David that his mother would like him to call him as soon as possible. Knowing something must be wrong if the President was not using official channels to contact him, David places the call.

President Victoria Wilson asks David and his husband Shane Thompson-Windsor to stop by Washington on the pretense of visiting Shane’s ailing father. However, she has other plans for the men. There are two world problems that are growing quickly and there are no other options than to send David and Shane to try to diffuse the situations. It appears that ISIS is about to take over and destroy a key dam in Iraq that if destroyed will flood a lot of the country. Also, Vladimir Putin is doing some sabre rattling around the border of Ukraine. She would like the pair to fly over there to find solutions to both problems without starting World War III. It is up to David to find diplomatic solutions while Shane once again protects his backside and gives his own unique opinion of the situation.

Shifting Sands is a good send off for the series but there was something missing from it to make it an excellent one. First, readers are used to books in the series being about twice as long as this one and the story felt a bit rushed. While most of the supporting characters make an appearance in the book, I felt that they should have been featured more during this book, especially their son Jack. But Sands does give you the romance and action from David and Shane that you have come to expect from this series.

The cover art by Maria Fanning has been consistent throughout the series. The same models for David and Shane have been featured on most of the covers. This cover has the pair standing in front of a window presumably at Winfield House. Above this, a picture of a swirling sand dune take the to third of the cover. It is a solid cover for the book.

The Condor One series started with David Windsor running for election for President while being guarded by Secret Service Agent Shane Thompson and their budding romance. The first three books deal with the election and David’s term as president and being the first openly gay president. Then next four books deal with the time immediately after David’s presidency and building a family with Shane and their adopted son Jack.

In the series, Mr. Simpson tackled marriage equality, the war in Iraq, the military industrial complex, don’t ask-don’t tell, energy policy, radical Islam, sleeper cells, Al Qaeda, ISIS, Ukraine, homelessness, gay teens and more. Mr. Simpson has tried to keep the series relevant but real life current events can sometimes get in the way of that. (Osama bin Laden and Muammar Gaddafi were still alive in his books after both were killed due to the lag in publication.) The only small quibble I had with the series is some continuity issues through the books. It seemed that the ages of Brandon Wilson and Jack Thompson-Windsor seem to bounce around. Also, David and Shane were first going to retire to Palm Springs but wound up in New Jersey. But these do not take away in the enjoyment of the series. Here is hoping that David and Shane have a fulfilling retirement away from their political stage.

Riveting series!

I just finished reading the entire seven book series and it was absolutely riveting. All the characters were fascinating and the various plots were intriguing and fast paced. I had a hard time putting a book down in order to catch some much needed sleep!
The protocol and security measures needed to accomplish the many varied goals of the U.S. in any endeavor is mind boggling. The stress these men and women must live with on a day-to-day basis is unimaginable to the average citizen. We must, as a nation, give thanks to everyone who is in the government's employ. Without these selfless individuals our nation wouldn't be the great nation that it is. And we must not forget the brave men and women who serve in our military. Without them we would not be the America that we enjoy through their sacrifice and commitment to honor and country.
This is a wonderful series I highly recommend. Kudos, John Simpson.

I have missed David and Shane

Wouldn't the world be a better place if we truly had diplomats like David. It would be fantastic if we could handle ISIS or Putin like this, but we can't. What saddens me is how little most people know about he situation the Ukraine, Russia's, Iraq or Syria. People know more about the Kardashians than what truly matters. Mr. Simpson keep up the great and wonderful work you do balancing entertainment and world facts.

Awesome story and so sexy

Who likes their romance and erotica with two super willing participants from the get go? I know I don't. It's always much better when there is some serious tension going on and someone is being pursued or has some baggage holding them back. Author Zoe Belle apparently understands this and depicts these elements well in Part 1 of "The Billionaire's Step". Julian is a self-made billionaire who still pines after the one that got away. Surprise, she (Cora) ends up in his office but has changed into a very strong-willed beauty. The attraction is definitely there and the encounters are super hot. Part 2 can't come soon enough for me.

Decent length for serial novella. Surprisingly good character development and a an actual story line. I read so many of these erotic based romances that they start to all be alike. Thus one stood out and was worth reviewing. Looking forward to reading part two of this story.

Nuclear Power is our best option in many ways

The case for Nuclear power is put forward eloquently by Barry Brook. In clear and succinct language he point to the strong advantages of Nuclear power. These are clear and persuasive.

1. Because renewable energy & energy efficiency won’t solve the energy & climate crises
2. Because nuclear fuel is virtually unlimited & packs a huge energy punch
3. Because new technology solves the “nuclear waste” problem
4. Because nuclear power is the safest energy option
5. Because advanced nuclear power will strengthen global security
6. Because nuclear power’s true costs are lower than either fossil fuels or renewables
7. Because nuclear power can lead the “clean energy” revolution

The Case against Nuclear power by Ian Lowe is summarized below.

1. Because it is not a fast enough response
2. Because it is too expensive
3. Because the need for baseload power is exaggerated
4. Because the problem of radioactive waste remains unresolved

Frankly the replies ignore the basic science involved in Nuclear power generation. Take point 5 for example, that producing nuclear power will increase the risk of nuclear war. The idea that spreading the technical capacity for nuclear power could spread the risk of nuclear war ignores several realities. First, that the knowledge of how to produce a nuclear weapon is spread widely through out the world. We cannot put that knowledge away now. On the other hand, the production of nuclear power burns the U235 that could be used for a uranium bomb. You need a concentration of U253 above 95% to make a usable weapon. Most countries that desire a nuclear bomb obtained one BEFORE building a Nuclear Power generation plant. This is because to make Uranium at the concentration necessary does NOT require a Nuclear Power Plant. To make the Plutonium necessary requires a totally different type of reactor than a power reactor. To get the necessary purity you have to put a slug of uranium in a special reactor for a couple of weeks and then remove it and purify out the Plutonium so that you only get PU 239.

The Plutonium in a power reactor is mixed with many other forms of plutonium that make it very difficult - to the point of ridiculous expense - to purify enough to make a reliable weapon.

So a Power reactor burns the potential bomb fuel and turns it into carbon free power.

The rest of points that Ian makes are a fair representation of the arguments against the use of Nuclear power. They are only convince those who are pre-disposed to oppose Atomic power.
