May be the best karate book ever written

This is the most complete instructional karate book I've ever seen. It came out in 1960 and has still not been improved on. The authors were disciples of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern karate. There is very clear step by step and pictorial instruction on how to do all the moves of traditional shotokan karate, the original style out of which all the others grew. If you are attending a karate class now you will recognize your techniques in this book. The styles haven't changed that much in 40 years. There are probably more moves in this book than in your class.
The book has 22 chapters. Some of the chapter titles are: striking points and vital points, stance, hand techniques, foot techniques, sparring, and throwing techniques. There are 40 pages of self defense moves.

Fundamental Shotokan Karate

Karate: the Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting by Hidetaka Nishiyama and Richard C. Brown is the perfect starter book for any one wishing to learn Shotokan Karate. It describes all the stances, punches, strikes, blocks, and kicks. An explanation of the application of Karate techniques in self-defense situations is given. Briefly outlined is the history and principles of the art but what is indispensable in the book are the recommended schedules for the different training situations which make this book a perfect guide for the student and helpful manual for the instructor. After learning what is in this book I would suggest moving on to one of the books by Robin L. Rielly; either Complete Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-2108-9, or The Secrets of Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-3229-3. My only wish is that the chapters on Kumite and Kata would be expanded but that is why I recommend the two books above as well.

Early work but still great

Considering this book came out originally in 1960 and was the first large-format book on Karate I had seen up to that point, it is remarkable that it has rarely been exceeded in all the time since. The photos of the basic techniques are very clear. The applications sections are generous with good coverage of sparring and self-defense. Nishiyama was in his prime here and you can see the power and intensity in his techniques.

I have a personal story about Nishiyama, although I didn't study with him myself, but one of own karate students did, and he told me this story. Nishiyama was in Los Angeles for some time back in the 60's and he was conducting a training session. One of the students, a guy by the name of Ray Dalke, who later led the U.C. Riverside Shotokan club to several national championship titles, was in the class. I met Dalke when I was a doctoral student at UCR back in the early 80's, but I actually heard this my student. Ray had never been very loose in the legs, especially the groin stretch, where you sit on the ground in a quasi-lotus position and bounce your knees up and down and try to get them all the way to the ground.

Anyway, Nishiyama came around to Dalke, and noticed his problem. He says to Dalke, "You want to have loose lap?" (Sometimes Nishiyama's English was a bit rough, but the meaning came through loud and clear). Dalke says, "yes, Master, I do." Nishiyama says again, "Are you sure you want to have loose lap?" Dalke says, "Yes, yes, Master, I want it more than anything!" At that moment Nishiyama jumps up into the air and comes down with both feet planted squarely on Dalke's knees, driving them all the way to the floor.

Well, he said Dalke's scream of agony could be heard for two city blocks. They had to get an ambulance and take Dalke away. But he survived and was back later after he healed with the "loosest lap" you've ever seen. I hope Ray doesn't mind my telling his story. Like I said, I met Ray in about 1980 when he was the faculty karate instructor at UC Riverside and he was really a pretty cool guy, as well as an excellent instructor. He loved the Shotokan katas and I recall having an enjoyable discussion with him about some of the more advanced forms.

Anyway, Nishiyama is one of the greats of the Shotokan style and this book is still one of the finest books on the subject. I will say one more thing about Nishiyama, which is that he has the most vicious-looking front kick I've ever seen. I've tried to emulate his style on this one but he's basically got the patent on it. Overall, still a great classic on the subject of karate that has rarely if ever been exceeded.

Great book - not so great Kindle edition

I've been a Clancy fan for years and love this series. However, the Kindle edition has some obvious flaws apparent right from the beginning. The initial quotes in Patriot Games from Edmund Burke and William Webster are simply not in the Kindle edition. Also, I believe the publisher used some form of OCR (optical character recognition) to input this book. Words like 'corners' in the hard-copy edition come across in Kindle as comers. Not a big deal, but jarring nevertheless. While I love the convenience of carrying around the whole series without the need for a backpack, this kind of sloppy, lazy data transfer gives e-books a bad name.

Jack Ryan's First Adventure!

International terrorism is the topic Clancy tackles in his novel, 'Patriot Games.' When history teacher and sometime CIA anylist Jack Ryan intervenes in an IRA hit on the Prince of Wales, he soon finds himself a political target. When his family is attacked in Baltimore Ryan again goes to work for the CIA in the hopes of stopping the terrorists. While the story is gripping and the action scenes fast-paced and exciting, the first two hundred pages of the book are for the most part slow. If you're a patient reader you should get through it okay. The ending is a climax in the great Clancy tradition and the characters, as always, are people you'd like to know. There is much more in the book than in the movie, but it's essentially the same story. On the whole it's a great first ride for Jack Ryan.

One Of Clancy's Greatest Books To Date!!!!

This book is Clancy at some of his best. The action starts in the first chapter. In the chapter, CIA anylast Jack Ryan witnesses a shooting while vacationing in London. Jack interveines and kills two of the shooters. One shoots him in the shoulder and escapes. Later Jack learnes he saved the Prince of Wales, his wife, and their new son. He also learns that the attack was done by one of the most dangerous and secretive Irish terrorist organizations, the Ulster Liberation Army or ULA. Soon, Ryan and his family become a target of international terrorism. This book was exciting! A page turner indeed. Besides a few dull filler chapters, every chapter is as exciting as the previous. The smaller sub-plots provide action in every page. A bit long when you first look at it, but it is truly a thriller. Clancy is the king of detial. The man could write a 1,000 page story on a trip to the grocery store and still keep you entertained. Not that I want him to write this though. An all around great book! "Two Thumbs Up!"

The Gem of 2-6

If you like Mr Sienkiewicz's work, this is a must have masterpiece. Visually, it relates to my tastes across decades the same way NIN and David Lynch do. Consistently counterculture spanning a generation, yet still fresh and edgy.

Thematically, this was my Twilight. All of this from the 'Baby X-men'. Teenage Super-heroes no less.

A somewhat middling chapter in the team's history.

Chris Claremont's run on "New Mutants" hits its fourth volume here, finishing up the storied issues done in collaboration with artist Bill Sienkiewicz. Sienkiewicz's time on the title is often remarked-upon as the golden age for the title, but on the whole, this second trade is a rather middling effort. There are a number of causes of this; I've never been as big a fan of Sienkiewicz's art as some, but, even that aside, the storyline suffers from extensive referencing to other stories running around the same time that aren't referenced here, and at times from featuring too little of the title characters. Spoilers follow, so be warned.

The collection is divided into roughly three stories, the latter two rather closely linked. The first of these is easily the strongest of the lot, as Professor X and a couple of his students (Dani Moonstar/Mirage, Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Douglas Ramsey (eventually to be called Cypher) jet to Scotland to help with the case of David Haller, aka, Legion. Legion, actually Professor X's son, has Pops' powerful psychic capabilities, but, because of a childhood accident, is autistic, and a serious problem for those around him. The group journeys inside Legion's mind, a story choice that Sienkiewicz's art style is most used to. Surreal dreamscapes are his thing (though the effect is somewhat lessened by the fact that it isn't noticeably weirder than his regular world). If there's a real flaw to this story, it's that it's not really a New Mutants story; it's a story about Professor X, Moira MacTaggert, and the Hallers; Dani and co. are just along for the ride.

After that, the problems really start; the next arc, first off, involves one of the plots Claremont is most maligned for repeating: some members of the team get captured and are forced to face off against each on in gladiatorial combat. Claremont has, over the years, driven that plot device into the ground, and, even taking into account this is one of the earlier iterations, there's nothing at all creative about it. Claremont also here starts throwing in characters who have no establishment in the "New Mutants", relying on readers being familiar with contemporary issues of "Uncanny X-Men" and other projects. Dazzler's entire motivation in this story depends on a miniseries not included (and, frankly, it's not particularly well-written). The plot also threads in and out of "Secret Wars II".

This arc leads into the only bona fide team story arc here, building on the revelation of the antagonist of the previous arc. This being, in one of the most infamously bizarre story decisions in Claremont's tenure at Marvel, "fat Karma". Yes, after some 20+ issues, Claremont returns to the MIA original leader of the New Mutants, Shan Coy Mahn, aka, Karma, who is now grotesquely obese and malevolent. Anyone familiar with Sienkiewicz's "Daredevil: Love and War" will know who he draws fat people, and Karma is nothing short of Jabba the Hut. This story actually ends up introducing a fairly major X-Men villain in his primary form, but as a standalone it's rather lacking.

For fans of the "New Mutants", probably worth a purchase (I know others rate this period higher than I do); for those looking to test out the X-mythos, earlier volumes of this series are probably a better bet.

Old stuff, but good

These New Mutants tpb's collect those good ol' new mutants comic book stories that weren't particularly complex or filled with cross-cross-overs between a zillion different galaxies and timelines. You could just sit down and read the story and that was that. Unfortunately the son of Xavier story line is not one of my favourites. However, the return of Karma-storyline is, and both are included. So, still 5 stars for quality, content and bringing these trades on the market!

Good read!

Good read. My father and neighbors worked at Broughton and told some of these ghost stories. Main reason Dad left was an encounter he had in one of the tunnels. Best friend went down into one of the tunnels before the demolition began. He said he felt the presence of others while in there. He never believed in ghost until he visited that tunnel.

As someone who is deeply interested in the paranormal I found this book to be of great insight! Each turning page keeps you on the edge of your seat as you read creepy tales of one of the most haunted buildings in western North Carolina. Included in the ghoulish tales you also recieve some knowledge in the history of psychiatric practices. I recommend this excellent book for anyone who is fascinated by the spooky world of the paranormal!

Great for students and history papers!

I have personally tried to read "Guns, Germs, and Steel" before, for personal development and for a school assignment (different occasions). But both times I was unable to finish, which is unusual for me. While the subject material is intriguing, and the author's voice is captivating, the book reads much more like a textbook than I would like. Which left me burned out.

However, this review was incredible because it helped me get the message of the book without being put to sleep. The 8 key takeaways are on point, and explore the fascinating history of the Eurasian nations in comparison to the rest of the world. The sixth takeaway, about governmental structure, was my favorite part. Because of these large governments that sponsored bureaucracies, Eurasian nations were more prone for exploration and exploitation.

I would recommend any student who, like me, found themselves struggling to finish "Guns, Germs, and Steel" in order to write a paper.

This is THE book to buy.

I had VERY high expectations from this book, based on the other books by Prophet Uebert Angel and I was NOT disappointed! His writing skills are nothing short of amazing, everything in the book is backed up by his real world experiences. Sometimes it takes a book to really spell things out in order for me to understand the concepts, and this book does an excellent job with this as well. In the last pages of the book, he gives real world examples of well known people and stories of how similar concepts happened to them. And most importantly, he backs things up from scriptures which make complete sense in regards to the bigger picture of the book. I don't think you will find another book like this anywhere, although I have read the entire book, I have the urge to go back and really study it again in finer detail.
