Like Debra Frasier's On the Day You Were Born (1991), the text, directed straight to children, describes how the world, from the smallest ladybug to the sky's smiling moon, welcomes its latest arrival: "You." The computer-generated, collage artwork is sometimes blurry, and some of the compositions lack clear, dramatic shapes and figures that will pull a young audience. In addition, children may miss the symbolism in the images: musical notes meant to represent the sound of a child's name, for example. Still, children will enjoy finding the reassuring face of the moon on each page, and the rhyming, rhythmic text includes lines that beg for participation: "The sound of your name is a magical one. My Daughter in Heaven

I gave this book to my daughter Christmas of 2011. At the time, she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at age 30. I was led to this book because it said so many things about her birth and life I felt. I also felt I would not share another Christmas with her on this earth. This is the anniversary of her death. She died on Sept.8, 2012. I felt my heart stop beating the moment hers did. Before she died, she told me how much she loved this simple book, especially the part about my love finding her wherever she would go. I reminded her of that when I held her hand in the hospital as she took her last breath. This book speaks volumes to the love a mother has for her child.

Makes me cry every time!

When I was pregnant, this book kept popping up on my recommendations. I didn't know the book, so the next time we were in a bookstore, I read it and thought to myself "This is WAY too sappy - why is it so popular?" The answer: apparently hormones, because as soon as we got home from the hospital, I NEEDED this book, STAT. Dancing polar bears to celebrate my son's birth? YES, I NEED THAT! Of course the wind was whispering his name on the night of his birth - I just didn't hear it because I was a little busy. WHERE CAN I GET MORE OF THIS? Hence, my word of warning to other post-partumy moms: Buy this one, cry your eyes out, and then DON'T buy every other book by Nancy Tillman. I bought four and this is the only one that we still read at 11 months - the other three are going into the donation box because they truly are way too sappy in a "special snowflake" way that nauseates me. But this book...it hits the perfect balance that your child is celebrated and unique without going overboard. And the illustrations are lovely. To be fair, the illustrations of all four Nancy Tillman books we own are lovely, but we don't need to own four of them. This one is the keeper.

The night after, the night he was born.

While I was pregnant my husband and I had a tradition going in which he would read a book every Tues/Thurs to my belly since he was across the country for work, so that the baby would become familiar with his voice. So when our baby was born 6 weeks early and had to spend some time in the NICU my husband made sure to read to him (in person of course) on the night after he was born and this was the book I had chosen for that moment and I have absolutely no regrets doing so! It was truly a special moment watching my husband read this to our baby in the NICU.

Ultimately this was a very wonderful book. So very sweet and memorable in telling a story to your child of how very special and loved he or she is. The artwork in this book flows beautifully throughout. I will most likely buy a hard copy of this book rather than just having it just on my kindle. Its truly a book we will keep with us for years to come.

Love psychology but hate math? Christine has written the perfect book for you. Math has long been the domain of the patriarchy. All those scary numbers and equations. Now your brain can finally relax! I'm hoping she writes a follow up about engineering without math for public educators.

A good book for students who do not like maths

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

About the Author
Neil D. Jespersen is an active member of the Department of Chemistry at St. John’s University (Queens, New York). He earned his B.S. degree with special attainments in chemistry at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, Virginia) and his Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University (University Park, Pennsylvania). He specializes in analytical chemistry research and has mentored more than 100 undergraduate research students and 25 graduate students. Dr. Jespersen teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in instrumental analysis and quantitative chemical analysis. He also teaches general chemistry on a regular basis and coordinates the general chemistry laboratory program. Dr. Jespersen is a fellow of the American Chemical Society and currently serves as a councilor from the New York section. He is also the faculty advisor to the ACS Student Chapter at St. John’s University.

Pamela K. Kerrigan is an active member and director of the Division of Natural Sciences at the College of Mount Saint Vincent (Bronx, New York). She earned her B.A. at Lakeland College as a double major in biology and chemistry, her M.S. at the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee), and her Ph.D. at Arizona State University in chemistry. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Kerrigan has mentored numerous undergraduate research students. She teaches undergraduate courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Dr. Kerrigan is the past chair of the New York section of the American Chemical Society and is a councilor. During her tenure at the college, she has been the mentor for the American Chemical Society Student Chapter. Overkill when compared with actual test, but still helpful

I bought this book as an extremely nervous and hectic junior who was scared for his own life coming into the AP chemistry exam. Now, after the fact (and having scored a 5), I would have to say this book is definitely overkill. Does it help you study and prepare thoroughly? Yes, but I think it goes into unnecessary depth, and some subjects that were covered by the book weren't even on the exam! But honestly, it's always better to go in over-prepared, just in case the test makers decide to trip you up with an obscure topic. Overall, it's an okay book and worth a quick read-through, but I wouldn't spend too much time with it. 4/5 stars because it wasn't as effective and helpful as it could've been. I wouldn't skip over it completely either, because it definitely hits some key points that helps you immensely during the test. For a gauge of how difficult the actual AP exam was, imagine somewhere between the difficulty of the example tests on collegeboard (easy) and the practice tests on this (very hard). But the actual test is definitely NOT as hard as the practice tests in this book, and there's no use to worry needlessly if you can't answer some (or quite a few) ridiculously hard questions and freak out about not being prepared (which is what I did).

It is more for practice of what you already know than teaching the best way to do things

Unless you are already extremely confident and familiar with all of the chemistry concepts covered then this is not the review book for you. Explanations are very complex and are not broken down for those who are not confident with the subject. It is more for practice of what you already know than teaching the best way to do things. I would under no circumstances recommend this book to anyone.

A very good resource

Most of the questions are fine; some do not have the standard challenges of the new AP Chem exam questions. The Practice Test, however, is still a very good resource for my students. Big book but light in weight, but the paper seems to be off-white.

I found this book to be the best intro to anthroposophical medicine book out there so far. There is more integration of the philosophy of anthroposophy into the functions of the body and human disease and healing. Really bridges medicine with anthroposophy well for anyone at any level of expertise in either subject.

Good introduction

This book is quite dense and requires some serious work to be understood properly. It is quite complete even if it is a bit old compared with the latest twists in compiler theory. It is a mix between theory and pratical implementation. This is its main strength and its main weakness: it is not a comprehensive theorical work on compilers neither a complete "pratical" tutorial. Anyway it is a good introduction for the (college-level) student who is willing to do some serious work.

Very, very good

This book covers a very difficult subject. It is intended for those programmers or students that really want to see what is going on under the hood. The majority of programmers today have no idea how things really work at this level. They are used to managed frameworks that do everything for them. In my professional opinion, that is great for rapid application development but the side effect is that it severely dumbs down the programmer. This book, on the other hand, is for those who are prepared to do some serious work. If you just want to create GUI applications for users in a quick fashion or even if you want to look at the C language because you are curious about it then this book is not for you.

This book is a well balanced combination of theory and practice and it is much more digestible than "The Dragon Book", in my opinion. For example, while I have found "The Dragon Book" a great resource for teaching college level students it feels too theoretical at times and difficult to follow. I have found that some readers of "The Dragon Book" get lost in all that theory and gradually lose interest. This book, on the other hand, is nicely balanced between theory and practice and many readers find it much more interesting. Even though there have been advances in compiler theory since this book was published, the underlying theory and practical examples still apply and I still find this book a great resource. I highly recommend this text to those programmers who really want to do some serious work and those who are interested in getting into the heart and basic essentials of Computer Science.

Good treatment of difficult material

This book has a nice balance of theory and practical algorithms. There is enough detail to allow a (patient) reader to implement his own compiler tools, though like most other books on the subject, this book leaves you with the feeling that the area might have died about twenty years ago (no insult intended!); an update needed, to include OO languages, some treatment of the complexities associated with parsing modern languages, C++ etc. All things considered, still a great book, well worth the money.
