Great for graduate level intro class

I taught the second semester of multivariate statistics to graduate students at our school of social work. Although graduate level, most of our students have very rudimentary at best statistical skills so the second semester began with linear regressions. I decided to introduce them to Stata so that they would have experience with at least a second statistical package - most know SPSS - and learn about the usefulness of this program. I selected Dr. Acock's book as a good way of getting them to learn how to use Stata in as painless a way as possible. The book fit the bill perfectly. It is written very clearly and walks you through many of the basics of Stata and provides good tips on post-estimation, a few tricks here and there, and a bit of humor.

Students who already know Stata or who have an advanced knowledge of statistics would not find this book that useful but for beginning courses and students, it is pitched just right. Now, if I only had a companion volume that walked through more advanced regression models in a similar way, I would have my texts for the class and could put to rest the venerable Tabachnick and Fidell text, which was perfect in its day but has become dated. I understand Dr. Acock is at work on such a volume and I will definitely have a look before launching into the course again in 2012.

The best book for beginners

This is the book I have been waiting for! It assumes no prior knowledge of STATA and goes step-by-step through practical exercises that a person handling data would need to do in everyday work. This book would have helped me a ton during my graduate courses, as I did not have any formal introduction to STATA and pieced together commands from various books and websites. Thank you, Alan Acock and STATA Press, for recognizing that not everyone is innately adept at programming. If you are a beginner or find yourself spinning your wheels with commands, this book is what you need.

As a PhD student,I found this book quite usefull.This book is great and easy to read.It gives you as much as you need in shortest time.If you don't have enough experince using statistical softwares such as R or SAS or any other advanced packages this book would be very helpful.

Not too good for self-study

I'm an 8th grader that wants to learn chemistry very badly, and bought this book.

Most of the book provides an adequate explanation for all the essential concepts encountered in a regular high school course. I know this because after reading this book, I looked at the state tests for a high school chemistry course, and I could do most of the problems. There are many examples in the book that help a student understand what the text is trying to explain. There are also a lot of practice problems after each section and chapter that reinforces the contents of the chapter/section very well.

However, without a teacher, if some concept is not clear, then chaos occurs. There are selected parts in the book that are vague in a way. To me, the noticable ambiguity in the text comes in the bonding chapter. They sort of assume that out of nowhere you can write an electron dot structure, a concept that other review chemistry texts take pages explaining. Hybridization was also explained poorly, and several weeks after I read that part (when I was finished with the book), I finally thought I got it, and then a chapter review problem proved that it was still a mystery. I have another chemistry book that I use to help me understand in case I don't get what's going on in this chemistry book.

Bonding isn't the only chapter that is a disaster in clarity (although it is the worst). The chapters from about 16-23 were all not as good as the other ones. There was also some guessing involved in the oragnic chemistry section, but that was not too bad; I still figured it out.

My school uses this textbook (as I found out months after I bought this book). With a teacher, this book is perfect, but without one, get ready to think; appreciate the pictures in there when you can, but focus a lot on figuring out the material.

This book is a decent chemistry book that does a good job in covering chemistry material. Although there are not enough example problems in the book to gain a good understanding of the "math" goes on chemistry. The book doesn't provide goods STEPS in chemistry problems. For example, the text lacks a section that tells teh student how to draw a Lewis Dot Structure and the steps to determine bonds. This text also has labs but they aren't really that good.

The book does offer good examples of realife chemistry in action. Things are organized well with good charts, graphs, and summary tables. The book problems are o.k. but one should supplement the book with another excercise book. It's easy too understand and good for first year chem only.

From his start in life on the banks of the Clyde, the fresh faced young man sought adventure in the American Civil War as a pirate of the Chesapeake and on Lake Erie. He was captured but escaped several times and when he finally evaded the noose he returned home to Scotland. However this young mans adventures were not over, he joined the staff of the London Daily Telegraph and throughout his 50 year career he covered some 24 wars, seeing more action than most living living men, including professional soldiers. He was present in most of the Soudanese wars, he traveled with the Gordon relief column and scooped his fall in Khartoum. He was also present when the British later reconquered the Soudan at the battle of Omdurman. Other major campaigns he reported on include the Boer War, The Russia / Japan war, and the French war against Madagascar, on which he published a book enthralling Western readers with hitherto rare information on this strange island. The French wanted him dead, but once again he lived to fight another day. Between the wars he was a well known author of Campaign books, a liberal bohemian and a "Friend of the Poor", running newspaper campaigns for the institution of Old Age Pensions, the clearance of slums and the problems of unemployment.
